Sound Editor Crashes When Trying To Save Project

Ron Watters

Question

I have Roxio Creator 2009. So far I used several applications and have had good luck. I've created several DVD's and CDs with few problems.

But I having big problems with the Roxio Sound Editor. The first problem that occurs is capturing an audio. I am able to capture the audio (WAV file) fine, but after I click on "Done," the program locks up. I have to use a Ctrl+Alt+Del to get out of it. That's the bad news. The good news is that it does not corrupt the capture audio file. The auto file is fine. I can play it from beginning to end. And I can re-open Sound Editor and Add the audio file and begin working on it. So I can live with this, but it's the next problem that is the show stopper.

I can make a few minor edits to the audio file and I can save the project file. But if I, say, insert silence at the beginning of the audio file and then try to save it, I get the following the operating system message:

"Roxio Sound Editor has encountered a problem and needs to close."

Once I close out of this dialog box, I get:

"Run Time Error C:\Program Files\Roxio Creator\AudioCore\SoundEditor11.exe R6025 Pure Virtual Function Call"

To fix this, I read through the posts, and it looks like a clean install is the procedure of choice. I followed all of the steps found in the document: "Clean install instructions for Creator 2009 on Windows XP," including the registry edits and Microsoft Windows Installer Clean-up Utility. Then I re-installed the software again (making sure that my firewall and virus software were turned off.)

But after doing the clean install, I get the same problem with the Roxio Sound Editor.

Can anyone suggest any other solutions? Or perhaps is this is a known bug?

My system specs: New Dell OptiPlex with Windows XP (Service Pack 2). 2 Gigs memory, 250 Gig Hard Drive (178 free). Sound: SoundMax Integrated Digital HD Audio

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions you can provide.

Ron

Thanks a million Walt for checking things on your end. It's always nice to have confimation. I was using WAV files captured from LP phono player through an amp.

Not sure that it's a bug.

I captured some internet radio in wav format using Easy Audio Capture.I then opened the file in Sound Editor, added 5 seconds of silence to the beginning and then exported the clip.I didn't get any error and the clip plays just fine.So as far as a bug,I don't think so.

That being said I'm not sure why it would error out on you.

Try doing the capture through Easy Audio Capture instead of through Sound Editor and see what happens. Then import the clip into Sound Editor to edit it.

Terry,

Thanks for replying. Greatly appreciated.

As I work with it more, it looks like it may depend on the sequence of events.

Try the following:

In Sound Editor, add an audio file.

1. Then set a marker at the beginning of the audio file.

2. Let it run for say 5 seconds. Then set another marker.

3. Right click between the two markers and select "Select area between markers."

4. Now select Tools >> Insert Silence.

5. Now try to save it by selecting File >> Save Project As. That's when the program crash.

Do you get the same thing?

Best,

Ron

Cannot duplicate your problem. Project file saved correctly and also exported the "new" mp3 file

Walt,

Do you get any difference if you capture a WAV file? That might make a difference. I'm not sure. I'll try a MP3 and check it.

I'm finding that the bug mostly revolves around inserting silence. I can edit the audio file using various other tools, but when I insert silence at the beginning, particularly if I use markers, then I can trigger the error every time. So far my tests show that if I stay away from inserting silence, I can Save the Project without crashing.

Best,

Ron

I just wanted to follow-up on the discussion. I've been testing and editing audio files all day now, and the following information might be useful if someone else runs into the same problems that I did.

1. I've never been able to solve the problem that occurs when capturing audio from within the Sound Editor. The program always locks up upon terminating the capture. However, it does not damage the file. Once the program is re-started, the audio file can be moved into Sound Editor. If you don't want to deal with the lock-up, you can use Terry's suggestion. In other words, use Roxio Easy Capture to do the capture, and then after the capture, move into Roxio Sound Editor. That works fine.

2. After quite a number of tests with Sound Editor, I found that if you insert silence at the beginning of a captured WAV audio file, particularly if you use markers, the program will crash when attempting to save the project. This seems to occur only with inserting silence at the beginning of the file. I encountered no problems inserting silence at the end of the file. All other editing tools seem to work fine. As long as I stayed away inserting silence at the beginning of the audio file, I was fine. For those of you that encounter this problem, there's probably a work-around. I haven't found it as of yet. As a precaution if you use the "insert silence" tool, I would immediately select File >> Save Project just to make sure things are okay. What got me into trouble early on was that I inserted silence and did a lot of editing and upon saving, I lost everything. You can avoid that by saving the project whenever you use the "Insert Silence" tool.

Hope this helps,

Ron

I have duplicated the Sound Editor problem as you described with a wav file recorded from the internet. Have not tested with other wav files.
