Problems Capturing And Burning To Dvd

dan_2009

Question

Ok, I am back :) I have a couple of issues, but I'd like to figure out why Roxio won't capture my whole tape.

So, I go into Capture Video (Roxio Media Import), select my Canon DV Device, and keep all the defaults (AVI DV format, 720x480), and I just want to capture my entire tape. It start to capture, but then always stops after about 1 minute of recording. Even when I set the capture length to 30 minutes it stops after about 1 minute - why is that???

2nd problem is with the Plug-n-Burn...it refuses to burn my entire tape - it gets about 52 minutes of my tape everytime, but never the remaining 10 minutes or so. I've even tried just getting a few extra minutes (like set it to capture 58 minutes, and it still turns off, and it says I've got about 20 minutes left on my DVD that I am burning to, and about 10 minutes remain on my mini-DV tape. Please help.

I am using my lovely new Dell Studio with Vista 64 bit and Roxio 2009, and connecting my Canon ZR10 via firewire.

Thanks guys!!!

Let's go with the first question since I used Plug and Burn only once and it cut off just as the video was about to run out. One hour on a DVD at normal quality for plug and burn.

Give us more information on your computer other than just Dell Studio. What model Cannon DV camera?

Things to check:

1) Is it only this one tape or have you tried several?

2) Do you have your hard drive set up as NTFS and not FAT. One minute if HD is not 4G but might as well check now.

3) Your hard drive is free of malware and it has recently been defragged. How much free space?

4) Do you have gaps in the tape?

5) Have you turned off your anti-virus? It may be scanning everything you are capturing.

6) You have all other programs closed including e-mail, anti-malware etc.

7) What is the native video format for that camera? As you capture, you computer may be trying to reencode and can't keep up.

I don't have the 64 bit Vista but several have complained about difficulties with it.

I just realized you answered some of the questions in your other thread. If you add that information to your signature via My Controls at the top of this page, no one will have to ask you again since it will show up in all your past and future posts.

I have the Canon ZR10, about 6 years old.

My computer is brand new (had it 1 week) - it is smoking fast and I have not had any issues with it.

I dont have any anti-virus install or any other programs like that. I dont have any other programs running.

As far as I know, my Canon ZR10 mini-DV tapes are in AVI DV 720x480 format.

My hard drive is NTFS, and I have about 260 GB free. My tape has no gaps in it......

Dan - pure speculation here, but 64bit has been around for YEARS. So tell me where are all the true 64bit apps? No where - people don't want it and companies aren't ready to totally rewrite their applications. Even in linux or Mac arena, I doubt if you can find that many real 64 bit apps (if any at all).

The only 64bit apps that I know you buy 'on the shelves' is all games. WinXP 64 and Vista 64 bit have been extremely unstable. Add to that is almost impossible to find hardware drivers, etc. Sooner or later, I'm sure Microsoft will shove it down our throats, but until then , I seriously doubt you will see many 64 bit applications at Walmart.

As far as I know Dell is the only computer manufacturer that seems to be pushing 64bit OS on unwitting buyers. I've know at least 6 or more people take computers back because nothing would work and they were all Dells with 64bit OS.

Can you capture with Windows Movie Maker?

I assume you are using a Firewire connection.

I captured video on my other Dell using WMM just fine, but I bought Roxio as an integrated tool to do all my capturing, editing, and burning. It would be pretty darn pathetic if Roxio couldn't capture and my 5 year old Dell Latitude with WMM could.

Roxio captures from tape camcorders just fine. The problem seems to be your hardware, setup, camcorder or recording?

The question is whether you can capture using WMM on the same system you are using Roxio. What happens on the other Dell is irrellevant

I agree. Try importing the video through Windows Movie Maker. Should be able to capture in DVAVI format. I just installed 2009 Special Edition, using the Roxio Capture device. Used the Roxio Media Import to capture an old VHS tape....movie ran 2:05. Then I imported to MyDVD and did the editing, etc....Burned to a Dual Layer disk and had to choose "Fit to Disk" because of the slight overage in time. All in all...came out fine. Roxio Media Import never once cut off the import....went all the way through. One thing I DID do...I created a folder on my C drive and named it DVD. Now, whenever I import, it goes there. You might try that.

Yes, it does, perfectly. 720x480, 13GB of video for 60+ minutes on mini-DV tape, just like I wanted Roxio to do.

I'm going to have to disagree with that comment - since it doesn't for me.

I agree, but my point was, I refuse to go backwards in technology (that includes WMM) when I just paid $80 for Roxio to do that job.

I just don't think it's appropriate to keep blaming the 64-bit OS whenever someone's software doesn't work. I've been a software developer for 12 years and I know better than to blame the platform before the software - you write code to adapt to the platform, browser, etc. Perhaps there's an updated driver that I need to get?? Although, I shouldn't need to get anything since the Roxio box has the "certified for windows vista" right on it. Surely you can see why I'd be disappointed in a product when WMM can capture video and Roxio can't. All the fingers seem to be pointing at Roxio, not the hardware, setup, camcorder or recording.

As I stated earlier, I've tried different ways of capturing video in Roxio, and they all seem to fail.

I am serious, and I have been reading.

Read this then.

When I talk about "real" computing, it isn't the everyday applications that 95% of the people here and everywhere else use - and it certainly isn't the games. It's software development and the servers that software runs on - my job (real). In the last 5 days I've installed 64-bit Java 1.6, 64-bit Eclipse IDE, 64-bit Tomcat server, 64-bit JBoss server, and a 64-bit SQLServer. Now, that to me, is the "Real" world - real enough where I get paid an hourly rate to do such things. It's not for everyone, clearly, but a lot of people like me will be using it. A lot of the applications I use have a huge memory footprint, and it's only going to get bigger in the future (for EVERYONE, not just me), so how would you expect 32-bit to possibly keep up with that trend?? If you have a 32-bit machine with 16GB of memory running large scale applications simultaneously that have a 1-2-3GB memory footprint, 32-bit is worthless. You will be swapping virtual memory all day long and the system will be extremely slow relative to 64-bit processing. I just don't see how you can really argue with that scenario. But like I said, 64-bit isn't going to be for all the people that buy their software at BestBuy or any other similar retailer.

Have you tried importing using MyDVD? My next import is going to be done with that....excellent scene detection and more.

I don't think importing is the problem, it's the capture that doesn't work for me. And to my knowledge the only place to "capture" video from the camcorder is "Capture Video" and "Plug and Burn". I think MyDVD is only used to import existing captured video, correct? Anyway, I've got my video on my computer using WMM, so I guess I can rely on WMM for capturing. Now it looks like I have a few different options for importing exisintg video - MyDVD Express, CineMagic, and VideoWave. Is one better than the others?

They all do different things.

Videowave is the full editor

MyDVD is the disc authoring app (makes DVD menus, etc.)

MyDVD Epxress Wizard version - less options

CineMagic is another Wizard to simplify file editing - again limited options

Not that one is 'better', but can compliment the others. Could depend on how creative you are or if you're in a hurry to get something done. ;)

Update the drivers for the computer from the manufacturer's web siye. Pay special attention to the drivers for your video card/chip.

I might just stick to WMM for capturing for now, since it's working just fine.

As for the anti-virus and anti-malware, that's a whole other thread. I have a hardware firewall that takes care of a lot of stuff, and I don't use IE. My Dell came with Norton anti-virus and I took it off, because it sucks. I have McAfee on my other computers and it sucks the life out of them performance wise, and leaves things scattered all over your registry that you'll never get out. I think they're all crap. I rely heavily on Windows restore points if anything goes wrong. Most of the anti-malware stuff has issues before you install it. Back on topic now..........

I am going to use MyDVD to burn my captured video to DVD and see what happens.

I'm still confused by your use of the word "capture". If you have the video file on your computer, just add it to Video Wave. There is no need to capture it again. Perhaps I'm misreading your earlier posts. Post 10.

What format is the video file?

Contrary to what Bobmitch says, don't use My DVD. That program is for making video menus and then burning your videos to a disc. If you start with My DVD and you have a glitch, there is no good way or going back to edit your project or trouble shoot it.

Video Wave is the application that will allow you to edit the video file, add music and transitions, etc. and to out them to different file formats if required (not required for standard DVD). You can also use it to trouble shoot the project by outputting it to a file - mpg2 for DVD best quality. If that encoding hangs, then it is easy to look at the time of the hang and trouble shoot the project in that time frame.

Please explain your understanding of the term "Capture" vs just copying the files from your camera's hard drive.

Capture: take video from my camcorder Canon ZR10 mini-DV tape and put on computer

Import: take video from computer and add it to VideoWave, CineMagic, etc...

In my 1st post you'll see that Roxio simply stops "capturing" video from my camcorder to my computer for no reason.

WMM, however, will indeed "capture" my entire video from my camcorder to my computer.

I haven't gotten any farther than that - my next task is to take the WMM captured video (720x480 AVI) and import it into Roxio so I can burn it to DVD.

Roxio just won't capture video off my camcorder - that's it. I will use WMM to capture all my video in the future.

Thanks for all the advice with all the Roxio options - I am anxious to try them out!

Do a google search for a small utility called WinDV. All it does is capture video from a DV camcorder to DV avi format- what I like about it it captures the video to individual files based on the timestamp on the tape. I find that makes it much easier to edit later since you are only working with small clips instead of a huge file.

Unfortunately WinDV does not seem to work with Vista 64 according to some post in that forum - just another reason to stay away from Vista in any shape or form

Ha, ha - no, no, we must embrace technology - all hail 64-bit processing!!

Give it another year and most apps will be 64-bit. Actually, I just want to transfer my vids from mini-DV tape to DVD to back them up, so I don't need to edit it any further than that - it's all my kids videos from years ago. WMM should work just fine for that.

Thanks anyway!

In your dreams maybe, but not in the "real" world!
