Mydvd Problem - Mpeg-2 Activation

Kenneth Chin

Question

I got Roxio Creator Business Edition pre-installed in my Lenovo notebook. The Creator itself works fine, but when I start MyDVD, the program starts and a dialog saying "The following codec needs to be activated : mpeg-2". After clicking ok, the program says "No permission - bad installation".

Anyone got any idea how to get around this ?

First, possible Lenovo-specific solution for Kenneth (and anybody else with Lenovo + pre-installed RCBE v10)

I had exactly same problem on Lenovo R500 + pre-installed MyDVD (within Roxio Creator Business Edition (v10.1.177)).

I lost half of a day (mainly surfing through this and other forums and testing various suggestions...) to find a solution.

I have found nothing, what would work for me, so I started to experiment by myself - I was lucky, as my first attempt has solved my problem. So, try this:

Just open "Install Additional Applications". If you cannot find an icon, start it from C:\Program Files\MLPS\APPS\MUIInstaller\LENMNC.exe

As you can guess, (re)install "Creator Business Edition" (no matter, that it is already installed).

I needed nothing more. After this, MyDVD is functional, w/o any prompts to activate mpeg-2 codec etc.

Second, comment for SynapticRecluse

I fully agree. "mpeg-2 activation..." followed by "No permission - bad installation" bug is definitely very serious. (who does not believe can just search this forum to see how frequent it is and that it repeats through various versions up to v10). "Solution" as presented on many places (manual disk cleaning, manual registry cleaning, unplug internet, copy code, plug internet, reinstall...), is absolutely ridiculous, unacceptable and amateur. I appreciate you have very clearly captured the point, that crowds of USERS need to do deep and time wasting investigation about this problem followed by number of illogical steps with shaky result. Otherwise, the software will be completely unusable (!), so uninstallation (if you have not enough skills to substitute Roxio's developers and testers) is not reflection of anybody's hot emotions but decision w/o any other option! For sure, any user (incl. me) would prefer to play with REMC's nice features rather than write angry posts like this.

And third, to malatekid

Your post, even though much shorter, is at least as OOT and emotional (and offensive) as SynapticRecluse's one. SynapticRecluse is very precisely reacting on the fact, that any suggested solution is far behind acceptable complexity for general user, so the SW is in fact unusable. It should be very important for Roxio to link key SW problems with key users' disappointments, as this link is behind lost credibility (not possible to fix the same problem through many versions of the SW), image (unusable SW) and...finally...lost piles of revenue$. If nothing, this should be interesting for Roxio.

I've not seen this as of yet in Creator 2009 but this was very prevalent in EMC9 and when found, it usually required a clean install. I think the best bet would be to contact Lenovo but as you won't be able to use any mpeg files until this is fixed, you might first try shutting down any virus programs, firewalls and spyware programs before trying to activate.

Before you attempt a clean install, make sure you have the proper discs to reinstall which is why I strongly recommend contacting Lenovo about this problem first.

Interesting, I thought that that activation was an issue only for EMC 9 and not Creator 2009.

Those types of programs are limited versions of the program as created by the computer manufacturer (OEM). In this case Lenovo. Have you looked at their web pages to see if they have an update/fix? If not, it is time to contact them. no one here would know much about that specific program and issues.

Here is a start. I searched for "Roxio".

You may be the first person that has come to these forums with a Roxio/Lenovo problem.

1. Can you post your build/version details by going to Help ---> About.

2. I don't believe you have C2009

3. I suspect this appears to be a installation issue. Do you have re-installation disc for the product?

You are replying to a thread that ended 2 months ago…

And a product that went out of production 5 months ago.

That may be that this thread is old and the product is out of production, but there are still us EMC10 users out here who continue to have this exact problem. And it only recently started for me. So it remains relevant for at least me. I'm thinking of looking for an alternative at this point. Nothing I do seems to correct the problem.

It would help if you were to answer questions when asked (in Jan) otherwise there is not much sense in posting at all.

Ken, this is a software problem and it's not new to ECM 2009. Same problem in ECM9 and I'm experiencing it right now with EMC 10. Other places here in the forum (see http://forums.support.roxio.com/index.php?showtopic=28020) discuss it. I don't know how Roxio considers this support when your asked to uninstall, edit your registry, download another cleaner from MS (which states not to use w/Office 2007 products) then re-install "to see if that fixes it". I guess these people think we have nothing but time to work out the bugs in their buggy software. I'm bailing. I'm uninstalling the software and finding something else. I should have known better - I've been burned by Roxio before but that was a new edition right when it came out. I'm installing ECM 10 and Roxio is selling 2009 so I wrongly thought they'd have the bugs out of V.10 by now . . . . WOW! Guess that turned into quite a rant - sorry! Synaptic

Do you have any specific problems yourself regarding the software? Haven't see you posted any specifics other than jumping to someone's else thread.

I could only access the Creator, as MyDVD closes after the error message. Frankly, I'm not really sure what version it says. Its not EMC 9, nor did it say C2009. Here's the version of the creator from the about.

Creator Business Edition

Version: 10.1.177

Build: 111B77A, LMD

Hmmm.. i'm afraid they don't provide the installation discs for the individual applications. They do have a Applications Recovery disc, but I'm hesitant to use it in case it affects all my other applications. If there's no solution then I'll probably uninstall Roxio and install Nero instead. Never had any problems with Nero.
