No Visible Files On Source Dvd+r After Copy

Wayne-o

Question

I have a new Sony VAIO running Vista Business and has EMC 10 pre-installed. I used EMC to make a backup copy of an existing DVD+R. Using the Copy Module, everything worked fine. I checked the newly made backup copy and it looked like the original. However when I put the original DVD+R back into the drive and open it there are no visible files. The disc shows there is still 1.5 GB free space left, so it knows there is something on the disc. But I can't open the H: and see the actual files on the disk itself. What has happened to the original files?

The notebook, the OS, and the DVD drive are all about 1 month old. I know that doesn't mean they are all necessarily working perfectly, but it would be a little odd for them to be at fault. The DVD+R are Imations that were also bought a month ago.

The original DVD+R has images off of a camera's SD disk. To create the DVD+R, I opened the SD disk on the computer and dragged folders onto the DVD+R. To create the copy I used the copy feature from EMC 10. What is wierd is the DVD+R copy is a duplicate of the original like I would expect. When I go to computer/"devices with removable storage" and look at the source DVD+R it doesn't show any files although it shows the amount of free capacity I would expect with the files that are there.

I'm happy to report that I tried this again and this time the source disc still had the original files - so I don't know what happened the first time. Very odd. I did what any basic user would do - inserted an SD disk, entered a DVD+R and then dragged the files to create the source disk. Then I used the Copy Module in EMC to make a backup copy onto another DVD+R. Success!

I also had a couple of follow up questions:

-Is it better to use the Roxio add feature to burn files to the source DVD or is drag and drop ok?

-When making a backup copy of a disk is it better to use the data copy feature?

-And one last question, which may be better on another forum, if I click on a video file it automatically brings up Windows Media. The audio is fine but there is no video. Any idea why this might be? (This happens on both the source and the copy.)

Many Thanks!

I did it, but had to use CD's since I am using XP.

I used both Disc Copier as well as Data Copy and both copied a usable disc. Tried it on different PC's and the results were the same.

If you have some RW you could try it again. – generally I do not recommend mixing and matching when it comes to Burning programs. It seems to be prone to failures.

Yes - I made the original source DVD+R using Vista Business by drag and drop. I then used Copy Module>Copy Disc from EMC 10 to make the copy.

If you've used Vista's Live File System to make your disc it will be packet-written. I wonder if something has later tried to make that packet-written disc "compatible".

Nope! There is absolutely nothing in the Copy process that in anyway would effect the source disc!!! There is no command in Source copy that would ever turn on the burn laser.

It is most likely an indication of media that is teetering on the edge of a dumpster; a drive that is flaky and needs firmware or replacement; or an OS that needs rebooted. Or you may pick any 4 items of the aforementioned :D

But I am curious how you are Authoring these discs and what you are using that would show Freespace?
