I presume you are referring to the Roxio USB Capture device and not one of the other 50 or so out there???

What capture program are you using in conjunction with it?

At this time, none of the Gurus have ever seen this device so we are all at something of a lose…

I also am experiencing this same problem. Perhaps the Gurus have had a chance to play with the Roxio USB 2861 Device by now?

My problem is the same as the original poster. I'm using a Directv HR21-700 DVR box to ouput S-Video and audio to the USB capture device to Roxio Creator 2009 Special Edition (Costco brand). I've tried setting the HR21-700 options to be 4:3 output or 16:9 output, but no matter what I choose, the preview and capture on the Roxio Media Import Center is always distorted, squished in. I don't see any options in Roxio to set the aspect ratio. It doesn't matter if I choose DV, DVD HQ, DVD SP, or any other resolution for the capture.

Is this a problem with the DVR output or can I tell Roxio to treat the S-Video as a 16:9 source? When viewing channels that are 4:3 originally, the distortion seems to be better.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Eric

Thanks for the link, but before I posted, I did review that article carefully. Perhaps I'm just missing it, but the article does not address the problem we are having. I am unable to figure out how to select a 16:9 capture instead of a 4:3 capture using S-Video and the USB 2861 Device. Is it not possible?

Thanks.

As far as I know, analog capture is always 4:3. There are no 16:9 settings.

Thanks for the information. I'll work on trying to get my source to output the 16:9 material in 4:3 format, but I don't think the DVR will convert 16:9 recorded material to 4:3. Changing the TV resolution didn't appear to have any effect on the output as seen by the USB 2861 Device.

Well, if it is in fact the case that the USB 2861 Device is only capable of 4:3 capture, then I have figured out how to have the HR21-700 DVR from Directv output 4:3, even if it recorded a 16:9 program. You have to select Letterbox or Crop, depending on your preference and also 4:3 TV ratio. If you leave "original format" selected, it doesn't matter if 4:3 TV ratio is selected, it will output 16:9 unless you specify Letterbox or Crop.

Thanks for everyone's input.

Once recorded you may be able in VideoWave to get it to be wide-screen by setting the Format on Create New Project to 16:9 and then clicking on the More Settings button and make sure the Default Settings for non-4:3 source is Fill Screen

That is what I had to do for captures made with an S-Video, which only outputs at 720 x 480
