Toast 8 And New Mbps (late 2008)

jijioben

Question

Does anyone know if there is a way for Toast 8 to work with the new MBPs? I installed it on a late 2008 MBP and could not make it recognize the burner: it reports that there the bus is "unknown" (should be SATA I think).

I'll gladly update if it works on Toast 9, by the way.

<Edit>: This time it produced an error:

Hardware Error 0x09 - Track Following Error

Medium Error 0x0c - Write Error

1. Verify/update firmware on the drive from mfg (if any)

2. Try cleaning the drive using a lens cleaner

3. Try using something like Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden - No-brand is a BIG No no.

4. What is the make/model of the drive.

Thank you! Done; is TDK a good brand? I thought it was but now I am unsure. After some more checking, I noticed that the Cicero DVDs I was using were automatically recorded at 2.4x in the other Macs I have, with no option for a 4x burn rate. I adjusted the burn rate in the new MBP and it worked. So now the only problem I am left with is the following:

DataWare 8x DVD-R fail to be recognized by Roxio, but can be burned by Disk Utility.

Some suggested that Toast 9 in its latest update will work; I have version 8 and would update if I were sure it works.

The drive is the internal drive (on SATA bus connected to the NVIDIA chipset included in the 9400) with the following characteristics:

MATSHITADVD-R UJ-868:

Model: MATSHITADVD-R UJ-868

Revision: KA14

Native Command Queuing: No

Detachable Drive: No

Power Off: Yes

Async Notification: No

Again, thanks for your help.

Thanks for the pointer - at least we know someone in Roxio is looking at the problem....

If they are looking at the problem, they aren't looking very hard. I have had an open case with them for about 10 days now with Popcorn (see link referenced above). Since my last post on the popcorn forum, i have been asked to run disk utility/repair permissions, follow an link to upgrade my firmware (link led to apple support page about how to use disk utility for 10.4 - I am running 10.5), and now, most recently to upgrade to popcorn 3.02 - which I was already running! Since there is not as much activity on the Popcorn forum and the problem seems in common with Toast, I thought I would post here.

This is my first experience with Roxio support, and I am pretty unhappy. As you can see from the entire support dialogue below, second level support has clearly not read the ticket for prior steps and the only way I could get them to respond was after pinging the chat support and asking for an update. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

*Once installed, confirm that you have a 'Popcorn 3.0.2 Update.dmg' file in your applications folder.

11/14/2008 Your email is confusing. That said, I did the following:

1)TS video folder is on local hard drive (boot drive)

2) Repaired permissions

3) the link provided discusses how to run disc utility for Mac OS X 10.4 and does not reference firmware updates, and in any case I am running 10.5.

4) There are no firmware updates from Apple (via software update and a call to Apple support) for my machine.

Lastly, while I see that "Roxio Mac Guy" has updated the forum to say that Roxio has confirmed this problem with the new Macbook Pro and both Toast and Popcorn, I don't feel that we are making meaningful proress on my case, rather we are doing busy work. I would like a meaningful update to the issue.

Thank you for contacting Roxio Support.

Have you copy the TS video folder on the local Hard drive?

Mac OS X 10.4.x through 10.5.x:

Choose Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.

To fix that, follow these steps:

Open Disk Utility (/Applications/Utilities/).

Select your Startup Disk from the device list.

Click the Repair Permissions button.

After the repair routine is finished, quit Disk Utility.

Restart the computer.

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?pa.../en/mh1928.html

The firmware update improves burning processing capabilities, and also addresses certain disc playback related issues.

Firmware plays the middleman between the drive's software and hardware. The most recent firmware updates will result in the best possible recording results for your drive.

Before beginning the firmware update process, be sure to remove any discs from your dvd drive.

11/13/2008 media is unlikely to be the problem for the following reasons: 1) I used the same media (from the same package) without problem on my imac 2) Upon suggestion on another forum I downloaded a trial version of DVD2oneX and it works fine 3) I did try two other brands of media with same problem

Further, I do not read the forum reports of problems with Popcorn on the new MBP. Please escalate this problem or consider a refund and I will purchase the other program. I have been a happy user since popcorn 1, this is getting frustrating.

11/6/2008 Have the newest Macbook Pro. Migrated license and application from my old imac. application loads, but freezes when burning. Force quit does not indicate application is unresponsive, but app hangs for hours with no progress both on "preparing" and burning. Force Quit also cannot kill the application.

FYI - your work-around (creating a .toast image and then burning using the disk utility) works for me.

Would be nice, however, if my DVD creation utility (aka Toast 8) could be used to actually create discs. . Oh well, maybe Roxio will fix the problem one day... I've given up on my support ticket, I feel as though I'm just getting the run-around from them - they've started asking the same questions and making the same suggestions all over again as though they haven't even read the history of the ticket....

Latest update fixes the problem for me.

Thumbs up to Roxio for fixing the problem....

HUGE thumbs DOWN to Roxio Support for zero communication....

See this post in the Popcorn 3 forum where a user confirms it is working with Toast 9.0.4. There also is a possible workaround that I suggest later in the thread, but I haven't heard back from anyone if it works.

Totally agree with you ZF. When burning DVD-R's, the best I can come up with is to use Toast 8.0.4 to generate a disc image (".toast" file) and then use Disk Utility to actually burn it.

The fact that iDVD and DU both work without a hitch indicates to me that it isn't media or firmware (particularly if you consider the program has problems detecting the SATA drive properly, complaining of an unrecognized bus).

I have had a problem ticket open with Roxio for a while now on this and am getting nothing but the run-around so far (first response suggested I uninstall and reinstall toast, second suggestion recommended I update all software and firmware on my MBP)....

Cheers.

[Edit: BTW - I use TDK and Verbatim media - JFYI]

I'm having this same problem, and I'm unwilling to spend $80 on an upgrade to Toast 9 just to get Toast running on my MBP. (I realize Toast 9 provides additional features, but none of them are worth any money to me. Honestly, I'd be satisfied with the feature set of Toast 7 if it were stable on my new machine.)

Add me to the list of people who can't get Toast to work on a new MacBook Pro. Thought it was my drive at first and was ready to take it in for repairs, but I can burn a dvd using disc utilities. And can burn a CD using Toast. But can't burn a DVD using Toast - and have tried many kinds of media...dvd-r, dvd+r, Verbatum, Tayo, Maxell...

Same thing happens every time - during the pre-burn it freezes on 41 second mark.

Has anybody confirmed if Toast 9 fixes this problem?

Sorry man, but this is a Toast problem. I have used every other combination of drive, application, DVD/CDs brand/type, etc... the constant is that Toast hangs with most of the CD/DVDs I use. Have been discussing it on the Apple forums here...

Great resource - I'll procure some DVD-R from the top provider and see. I especially love the identifier program. There's lots to learn. Thank you for your help, much appreciated.

:)

Don't waste your time. I use Taiyo Yuden DVD-R and those are what I'm having problems with. They are the absolute best media out there and they aren't working.
