Converting Video

portfoleyo

Question

I was curious to know which would be the best solution to convert dvd chapters (.vob files) to save space on my hard drive but still retain most of it's quality. I have roxio toast 9 but am still very new to it's features. I notice convert option has many selections.

I run an intel imac with a gig of ram on the latest leopard operating system.

Thanks for the advice. i will use the apple tv option, what is the difference between that and using the h.264 export option?

Logic says they'd be the same but even though everything appears to have the same spec the AppleTV file size is slightly larger. Also, I've noticed that my Turbo.264 does not work when I choose H.264 but does work when choosing AppleTV.

Saving for AppleTV will give you high quality while reducing file size. You might want to invest in more RAM. It makes a huge difference in performance.

Alternatively you might consider ElGato's Turbo.264 which works in conjunction with Toast. It converts the video using its own hardware encoder which greatly reduces both the time and the demands on the processor.

One more thing: Either use the VIDEO_TS Folders setting in the Convert window to access the VOBs or place your VIDEO_TS folder on the desktop and choose DVD with the top button of the Toast Media Browser to access the titles or chapters. Toast sometimes doesn't work well if VOBs are dragged in directly. If you no longer have the VIDEO_TS folder you can use MPEG Streamclip to convert the VOBs to MPEG which work fine when dragged directly into Toast.

I've been using the appletv option when converting files. some files that i've downloaded from the internet are big files so i convert them to save space. I've gotten 300mb files to 120mb. The only drawback is that i notice that some files that are 1280 x 720 come up as 960 by 540. is there a way to keep the original size?

Choose Custom next to Quality when you click the Red button and you'll see where you can change the output resolution.
