The File You Are Trying To Use Cannot Be Edited, And Has Not Been Added.

Question

I am running Roxio Creator 2009 on Windows Vista Ultimate (32-bit). I am taking recorded HDTV streams (from MythTV, captured via Firewire) and am trying to create high-def DL-DVDs for playback in my Blu-Ray player or PS3. When I launch MyDVD and create a new AVCHD project, I select the recording (always an MPEG2, from what I can tell) and then receive the error in the subject. When I first installed Roxio Creator 2009 on my fresh Vista install I would at least be able to open the title and do some editing using VideoWave but then the recording would never burn to DVD and my machine would usually freeze up. That was a month or so ago and since then there have been a couple of updates to Roxio and certainly some Windows Updates applied. Now I cannot even open a .mpg in MyDVD or VideoWave without getting that error.

Very simply, I just want to be able to create DL-DVDs from my MythTV recordings. The files open fine in VLC and/or Windows Media Player, as well as CinePlayer. My hardware, if it matters is:

AMD Athlon-64 X2 5000+

4GB RAM

Seagate 1TB SATA 3.0 HD

LG DL-DVD burner (ATAPI)

SONY DL-DVD burner (USB 2.0)

nVidia 8800GT 512MB graphics card

The system should be powerful enough and doesn't seem to be failing due to any sort of resource issue. It just seems that the program is flaky and from what I've read in these forums that seems to be common. I have not tried uninstalling and reinstalling the application yet, mostly because that seems like a ridiculous thing to have to do in order to have functionality that exists in the program suddenly work. My system is very barebones in terms of applications. Roxio, Office 2007, Canon Zoombrowser, Handbrake. That's about it.

Has anyone seen this issue before and if so, what can be done to correct it? As I bought this program simply to record HDTV to DL-DVD for later watching, I hope that it is in fact capable of performing that function. Thanks for any help you can provide.

What device are you using for HDTV reception? Do you have any other software that can record from your HDTV card? Try using the software that came with your HDTV device. What extension is used for MythTV recordings?

MythTV appears to be linux application. Are you recording in Linux OS?

I am using the firewire capture method, not a capture card. The files are saved as .MPG but MythTV forums say they are transport stream MPEG2, as opposed to Program Stream MPEG2. I have tried renaming the extension to .TS and when I do that MyDVD says it needs to convert the file to an editable .MPG.

The only reason I don't think the files are necessarily the problem is that when I first installed it let me open and edit these files, but when I saved a project and tried to burn to DVD it would hang my machine. Now the opening part is greeting with an error.

I will try letting it convert the file in the meantime, unless someone has a better suggestion.

Thanks for the reply!

Okay, I just tried to let it convert the .TS and it says:

The MPEG-2 transport stream file you have selected contains one or more unsupported streams.

Also, one thing to note is I'm using the CUDA drivers for my nVidia card - but they are the same drivers I was using when I first installed Roxio.

Thanks again.

I think the files are the problem. HDTV recordings (I think) are usually .m2t files. Try that extension and Yes, Videowave will want to convert them before using them in a project. Videowave/MyDVD DO NOT handle these files natively. You will not loose any resolution during this conversion.

Are you dual booting with linux and Windows? If you are trying to run Creator 2009 within Linux, that isn't supported.

I tried your suggestion and renamed to .m2t. Unfortunately for me, same result on the conversion. My MythTV machine is a separate PC from which I copy these recordings. I've run into some issues with streaming the files to my PS3 and I want to be able to watch them on my Samsung BD-P1400 Blu-Ray player so I really want to be able to record them to DVD.

I just don't understand why now I have an issue even adding these files to a project where in the past they would add but hang the PC when attempting to burn. Would you recommend a utility to "clean up" the recordings? I've seen posts stating that firewire recordings (especially HDTV) are sometimes problematic due to the fact that the server is literally dumping a stream to disk and therefore any issues with that stream are captured on disk as well. I'm pretty new to anything video-related so I'm not very familiar with tools like VideoRedo.

Again, thanks for the help so far.

So have always been having problems with these files.

I have no idea what you mean by "firewire" recordings. You will have to explain a lot more exactly what you are doing, your setup, etc. I don't think anybody here knows very much about MythTV and the video it generates.

Firewire to most of us means a "cabling" interface between a source device such as a camcorder and the PC.

Actually that's exactly what I mean as well. My cable box is cabled directly to the firewire port on my MythTV machine. The MythTV box records the stream it obtains from the firewire port. Unfortunately I don't know much more than that. The files come down as .MPG to the disk and I can copy them to my Windows PC and watch them using VLC, WMP or CinePlayer. However, if I take those files and try to open them in VideoWave or MyDVD I get the error in the subject of the thread.

And no, this hasn't always been the case, though I've never been able to successfully burn any HD media using Roxio. It used to simply freeze on my at the point in which I tried to burn a project to disc. I used to open the same MythTV recording files and edit them to remove commercials, etc. Now I can't even open the files.

I think the best course of action is to do the clean uninstall/reinstall and see what happens. I'm not convinced it's the files themselves, but I don't have any other HD media to test with. Is there a place I can upload the files I use to see if others have the same issues?

Thanks again.
