Problems Burning From Mydvd

chilscout

Question

I am having problems burning a mydvd project to DVD. Please bear with me while I go through the history:

In all cases I am trying to burn to an empty 8.5gb Maxell DVD+R double layer, single sided DVD medium.

My first attempt created precisely what I wanted - a mydvd project containing several videowave projects running from a single menu.

I then tried to 'enhance' the presentation by adding an intro movie, a new menu background image and audio and, due to a production error, replacing the videowave productions with mpg files which run fine in Media Player, Videowave, etc.

On trying to burn the first DVD (quality set to fit to media), the DVD accepted the mpgs and the intro movie, but not the new menu background image and audio. I tried this twice, but to no avail.

I resorted to creating a new mydvd project. Noticing that the 'fit to media' option was actually showing that I was using more space than was available on the DVD (not sure how this works when you select 'fit for media'), I selected the LP option, which fell well within the 8.5gb (actually around 6.8gb). In the burn menu, I chose to create a folder set on a hard drive with loads of space (40gb and same drive as project in). This ran for 8 hours and still only got half way through. It was still running when I decided to abort the process.

Finally, I have made two attempts at simply burning the project to a folder set (no disc or ISO options) in the hope that I could simply do a data burn to DVD at a later stage. However, neither of these appear to have worked; when I look at the first attempt at a DVD that worked, the DVD contains two folders (roxioplasma and video_ts). The hard drive folder only has a video_ts folder created and this does not appear to have as many .bup, .ifo and .vob files in it, neither is it anywhere near the same size as that on the DVD.

Am I going wrong somewhere? I am loathe to waste another 8.5gb DVD trying as I have already got through a few and it's getting expensive.

I am new to video; what are all the .bup, .ifo and .vob files about and how do the roxioplasma and video_ts folders interact to make the DVD work? is there any way in which I can test the files burned to the hard drive folder to see of the project works?

What are the chances of getting Roxio to give me a few replacement DVDs ;)

Many thanks for your comments Jim.

Can you clarify on the following points, please?

>Your HD free space is confining, but not the cause of your woes.<

40gb is confining? What should I be looking at in an ideal world?

>What was lacking was any mention of the LENGTH of the project. (file size in video work is a useless measure but time is important)<

Three projects in total; one a slideshow lasting 11 minutes and two mpg, one lasting 1hr, the other 2 hours. How do these sound?

>I never use Fit to Disc. I use Highest Quality and burn to a File (ISO) or Folder Set if it is too large to fit at that setting. Video Copy and Convert will do a much better job of making it fit.<

Excuse my ignorance here. Can you explain this a bit more? If I select either the ISO or folder set options, they burn to my hard drive, don't they? Are you saying that if the HQ format is too large for the DVD, then the answer is to burn to ISO or folder set on my hard drive then use Video Copy and Convert to burn to the DVD? I'm being lazy, but are these part of EMC9?

Sorry about posting in the wrong group - saw the '9' in the title and went blithely (or should that be blindly!) on.

Having Easy Media Creator 11 suddenly named 'Creator 2009' has caught many people out. Perhaps the sales branch are superstitious and could see EMC 13 was looming on the horizon, and decided to get in early ?? Silly idea! :)

Do you have EMC9 or Creator 2009?

A 1 hour AVI file is 13Gb. 40Gb is confining but not unworkable. Keep it cleaned up and defragged.

An 8.5Gb disc will hold slightly under 2 hours at Best Quality. You are trying to put 3:11 on it.

The way I described is the way to do it – HQ to Folder then VCC to burn disc. Make sure you set the type of disc in Disc Size at the bottom of MyDVD.

I believe that ISO will be limited to 2 hours or less so you will have to use Folder. CineMagic can play that folder to confirm its' contents. But you must use VCC to burn it!

Working on EMC 9. Tried updating to 10 a while ago but got more problems than it was worth (despite a clean install), so reverted to 9. With the problems I have had with Roxio in the past, I am loathe to fork out more money on another 'improved' update. Although, I am due to get another brand new PC soon, so might be a chance at doing a totally clean install with 10 or even 2009.

Anyway, I have a folder set on my HD (video_ts) which has a collection of BUP, IFO and VOB files in it. I have tried to use CineMagic to look at these, as you suggested, but they are not showing as available files when I go to the add video/photo button.

Am I missing something?

Also, can you give me a quick and dirty explanation of how the video_ts and roxioplasma folders interact when the final DVD comes together?

Again, thanks for your help on this.

Sorry, Jim, forgot to ask; is the Video Copy and Convert an option within Roxio? I cannot find it in MyDVD or in the main EMC9 menu.

Perhaps Jim meant to use Cineplayer instead of Cinemagic to play the Video_TS folder

Zero chance on replacing your loses…

You cannot burn a data disc and think it will behave as a movie. It won't work, the actual formats are different. (there is a way listed in Tips & Trick but you have to follow instructions very closely)

Your HD free space is confining, but not the cause of your woes.

In wading through all that text in your first post, 2 things were interesting. Your comment that a previous "Project" wouldn't load and the menu issue… There is something questionable going on here.

What was lacking was any mention of the LENGTH of the project. (file size in video work is a useless measure but time is important)

I never use Fit to Disc. I use Highest Quality and burn to a File (ISO) or Folder Set if it is too large to fit at that setting. Video Copy and Convert will do a much better job of making it fit.

Rendering time is dependant on your CPU speed and format of the files used in your project.

You should be able to use CinePlayer and navigate to the Folder set you created and play it. See how that works?
