No Disc Verification

tricky_1

Question

I am burning CD & DVD disc images to their respective media from disc image files and find that the CD burning verification does not work but the DVD verfiication does. The CD disc image is a .Sd2f file and the DVD disc image is a .img file. I've even tried the CD image file as .bin / .cue combination but get same results. I need to verfiy all my burning operations.

Any clues? Thanks.

Any news on this yet?

Sorry I forgot you. I'll burn an audio CD from a .Sd2f file tomorrow and see if there is any verification. My expectation is the result will be the same as yours. Audio CDs are not formatted like data and video discs and that may be the reason. There is a Compare feature in Toast's Utilities menu that may serve this purpose so I'll give it a go as well. One tip I've been told by audio engineers is to always burn audio CDs at the slowest possible setting to good media. That used to be 1X but now it's nearly impossible to find drives or media that burn slower than 8X.

It looks to me like there's a bug in Toast 9, and the same happens with Toast 8 and 7. Because I'm producing duplication masters I use archive quality CD & DVD stock (and I have tried Sony, Maxell & Memorex media) but again, because the choice to verfiy CDs never occurs, I believe it's a bug. Maybe people don't verify CDs these days so this "surprise feature" hasn't been reported yet. Anyway thanks for your suggestions.

Just a suggestion having nothing to do with your problem, None of the media you mentioned would be considered top of the line with Memorex being near the bottom along with store brands.

Try some Verbatim or better yet Toiyo Yuden. Choose the type you use and then read the reviews.

My first guess is that the CD laser in your disc burner is failing and it may be time for a new drive. First, though, try a different brand of CD-R and/or a laser-cleaning disc.

DVDs are burned using a different laser.

Great idea but my 2008 Mac Pro (which has two super drives fitted) and my 2008 MacBook pro both have this issue. To be more specific, the verify function is completely bypassed for the CD burning and the disc is ejected where for DVD burning there is a choice box that comes up and asks what you want to do and then continues on to verify after a small time out.

Thanks for the media info - and yes, all I use for production masters and archiving is Toiyo Yuden - I use DVDinfoPro in conjunction with a specific Nu burner (on a PC) to examine burn quality. And yes, I concur, the slower the better for production master burns both for CD and DVDs.

I just checked and you are correct there is no way to verify or compare the burned audio CD with the master file. I don't think this is a bug but rather an issue with the audio CD format.

I suggest contacting an audio engineer about how they check disc masters.

Sorry, I misunderstood the issue when I first replied. I'll check sometime this weekend to see if the same thing is happening on my system.
