Ripped Cd Skips

vid2man97

Question

Hello all.

I have a real head scratcher here. I don't get around to capturing music too often. The last time I did, it was from some vinyl to mp3 and all went very well.

Yesterday I tried to rip a few songs from cd and it sounded as though I was playing vinyl with the occasional skip in the resultant mp3s. Some music will have a few, some more than a few. It seems random, not always near the beginning or end for example.

This is what I've tried so far....

Yet another clean install (I know..hard to believe but I think that's number 3 for me).

I've tried to rip from burned and pressed cds with all giving me skipping music.

I've tried various extensions (mp3, wma and so on) again with the skips there.

I've also tried to batch convert some wma files that I had to mp3 and they too showed signs of missing bits.

And, I've tried various quality settings all to no avail.

Oh, and I just remembered. I've tried the rip from both of the dvd drives in my signature with the same results.

What I really don't understand (among many many things in this world) is why I can convert vinyl and tape to mp3 but converting from cd to mp3 doesn't want to fly for me.

I appreciate any input anyone may have on this bizzare situation. My schedule is tight this week, so if anyone suggests anything and I don't get back to you right away...I'm not ignoring you...I'm thankful for advice and I will try to work with it and get back to let you know how I get on.

You got my hopes up with the suggestion to try MDC. But alas, it too had intermittent "skips".

I just can't seem to marry EMC to my computer and have them live happily ever after. Something in this computer just doesn't like letting EMC do its thing. I remember going from ver.7 (which turned faulty on me one day) to 8 and things rocked. I suppose I could try going to ver.2009.

thanks anyway cd.

I have solved ALL of my minor glitches with EMC today!!!

I accidentally found out that KasperskyAV2009 was still interfering with program installs.

I was updating some Adobe software when it slow and at one point hung. I was puzzles as KAV was "protection paused" as I always do and is recommended by Kas.

So, I actually clicked on the icon and chose "exit". I remembered this as you need to do this should you want to uninstall KAV and this truly is suppose to shut it down.

This time my EMC clean install not only installed blisteringly fast, but IT WORKS!

A lesson to be learned for any out there that have KAV.

Somehow a smiley face icon can't say it all...

thanks all

For any install I always disable or shut down "everything" (firewall, AV, applications)no matter what the other software claim

Most definitely Walt. The problem with Kaspersky for me in this instance was that their method of disabling their software likely works most of the time. I always assumed I was doing well following their methods but now I know better.

Part of what tipped me off was upgrading Acrobat Pro induced a pop-up from Kas. But...I thought protection was "paused" (KAV advice on how to "stop" their program).

Well apparently that wasn't good enough and I remembered to "exit" the program altogether and that truly shuts it down. It's like we've all seen so many times in so many posts about antivirus programs interfering with installs. It was just in my case, the disabling process was flawed.

Yes, I'm rambling now but I've always been a fan of the Roxio software and I'm just happy to have it running smoothly.

I've never used any registry cleaner...they scare me.

This computer has Kaspersky AV on it which has nothing in it like Norton.

And....just before posting this quirky problem, I did yet another clean install. Theoretically, if anything was broken, it got fixed in the new install.

The only thing I can think of is a conflict with my Nero Ultra (ver.6). It played well with EMC8 but I can't imagine anything else being a problem as this particular computer is only six months old and I try to keep it clean. I could uninstall Nero but, if you remember I had a problem a while back burning to disc. I burn my videowave projects to iso, then burn with Nero.

If you think it's worthwhile, I could uninstall both programs and reinstall just EMC10.

thanks for trying cd...

I still have Nero Ultra Version 6 on my computer, and it has never affected any of the EMC suites, so I think that it is fine, to leave it on your computer.

I have Nero 7 Ultra installed, like GPB have no conflict with it and Roxio.

Sknis advice is worth a shot.

What encoder and bit rate options are you using in Roxio to rip?

If you do a WAV or Windows Media Audio rip, do you hear the skip?

If CDex is ok, it's some Roxio problem somewhere....

I appreciate everyone sticking with me on this.

GrandpaBruce and cd---thanks for the input on Nero...I'll leave it on.

Sknis---Most definitely I have KAV off during install (right click on the K icon and choose "pause protection until user enables") as with any program I install. And of course, msconfig is used to shut down everything until after the install.

I do not have a separate sound card but rely on the onboard Soundmax. If the driver for it can be updated, I wouldn't know how. I've updated other drivers and firmware before but I've never touched onboard sound.

CD---I've tried different bit rates and formats ripping in Roxio. I didn't try wave but remember WMA definitely skipping. I only tried mp3 in Music Disc Creator, not wma or wav so I might try experimenting some more.

Nero rips and CDex rips. I should be happy that I have the ability to rip but it's a little disappointing nonetheless.

thanks for trying all...

Your doing this in Music Disc Creator?

I would try CDex free 2.3mb ripping program, choose your settings and encoder, under option, settings. Quickest way to see if your Roxio software or hardware is broke. I've used CDex 1.51, 2003 version in XP for years. There is a 1.60 and 1.70 beta, just type CDex download in google.

I caught a break and checked in here and this is the result

(My first post was all done in EMC10...clicked on the Audio tab...clicked on RipCDs by the way)

I tried CDex and it works well. So, my EMC is still a little broke after so many clean installs. Guess I'm lucky that for the most part the things I do with it work. Just these little nags now and then pop up.

I appreciate the quick help cd.

High fives to you, and a kick to Kaspersky. :) I am glad you got it installed correctly, now.
