Records Me Talking When Capturing Video

Britgirl1

Question

Hi,

I just bought Roxio Creator 2009 and I'm trying to capture video from a camcorder. Not only does it record the actual video but it records every noise in the room with me at the time. For example, when we played back the video of my daughter's pre-school graduation, I heard the soundtrack fom the video but I also heard me making comments like "Wow - look how huge this video file is." and "Look - I'm converting your graduation to digital format!"

Is this normal? I guess I assumed the recorder would only pick up noise from the device that is being recorded from. Does anyone know how to solve this problem (other than isolating myself in a completely silent room while converting video and audio)?

Thanks!

Or just unplug the microphone. :) Give us more information on your machine, too. Brand, model, sound chip, etc. I have an HP with WinXP with Realtek sound chip. I have no problem enabling or disabling any sound input or output using the standard Windows Sound control panel.

I can disable the microphone. However, when I did that, my video transferred with no sound whatsoever. Apparently, the sound it did pick up when the microphone was enabled was the sound coming from my camcorder (I had the sound turned up and was watching the video while it recorded). I have a Dell XPS M1330 with Windows Vista. My audio is: SigmaTel High Definition Audio Codec.

I'll make sure my Windows updates are current and will check Dell's website.

Tonight I am going to try recording a cassette tape. Hopefully I won't have the same issues.

I'll let you know how it goes....

On a slightly different track - right click on the 'speaker' icon on the task bar, open volume control and make sure that the 'Line In' slider doesn't have a tick in the box - if it does, clear it (it's the 'mute' option when ticked)

I'm so frustrated - I just tried converting a cassette tape. Ugh!!!! I am having the same issue - I can record via the built in microphone array - but it's literally just recording sounds it hears in the room. The RoxioLP and Tape Roxio will not let me choose to capture from my line in - instead it just lists my microphone array, speakers/headphone (which doesn't work either), or HDMI. Perhaps it's a Windows Vista thing. I'm ready to throw this software in the garbage. :(

Maybe skins has hit your problem with his post #6 above. You have a laptop and apparently certain models have build-in microphones that are enabled when you do some recording. Have a read through this thread it describes exactly the problem you are experiencing

I haven't ever had that happen, but then again, muting your microphone should cure the problem.

Thanks for the advice! I just tried that and now I'm not getting any audio. I think the problem is when I go into "options" in the Roxio Media Import page, it has my audio input device listed as the microphone. There seems to be a dropdown menu in this field however, it is greyed out and won't let me change it.

When you capture videos, what does it list for you input device?

Thanks!

When you capture video from your camcorder, your audio device device selection is not all involved and there is nothing to set there.

How are you connecting your camcorder to your PC? If it's a tape camcorder you should be using a Firewire connection.

I have the Roxio video capture USB device attached to my laptop. Then, using the cables that came with my (non-digital) camcorder (that uses 8mm tapes), I have the white audio cable attached to "audio in" on the video capture USB. I also have the yellow video cable plugged into the USB device's yellow video cable.

Thanks!

I remember another post like this with a HP computer. For some reason, the internal mic could not be disabled on some computers. Go to your computer manufacturer's web site and search for that problem.
