Trouble With Capture

bigbassg

Question

Hi all,

I'm working on a project and need to edit a 48 min DVD down to about 5 min. I need to take the video directly off the DVD and edit it. It's my understanding that capture will take DVD video and do this. I'm having trouble to get my DVD drive to show up when I'm using capture though. Are there any settings I can modify?

Thanks,

Mike

I'm all the way updated and I've IE6 and WMP10. I never updated these. I'm using this as a recording computer in my studio so it never really sees the internet unless I absolutely have to take it online for something. It's actually still operating on XP pro service pack 1. I don't know if that makes any difference. Do you know of any windows updates that might help it recognize the files?

Can you copy the Video_TS folder from the DVD to your hard drive? Once there does WMP play the video?

I was running XP Home and SP1 untill recently and never had a problem with Windows not recognizing any files.

You're welcome. Let us know how it works for you.

Okay so I've gotten it all edited and I'm trying to make a DVD, but for some reason Roxio has stopped recognizing my drive. It has in the past succesfully burned cds and dvds for me. I guess this is why it didn't see the drive in the beginning to capture. Is there any place where I can change the settings to make it recognize the drive?

Copy the contents, of the DVD, to your hard drive, and then capture from your hard drive.

Yeah, it generally means that the DVD is corrupt.

Do you have another DVD drive, that you can try it in, just to see if it can read the DVD?

I did try it on another computer. I copied the VOB files onto an external hard drive, but still haven't had any luck getting Roxio to recognize the. I did try a trial version of flash dvd ripper and was able to get some video, but trial version only allows up to 5 min. I didn't want to buy the full version if Roxio could do it, but I may end up doing that.

Try changing the extension from VOB to mpg and try again. It should take it.

New versions automatically recognize that VOB files are really mpg video files.

My EMC 7.5 can capture from the hard drive, or a DVD.

Is that external hard drive, connected to the same computer as the one you are having problems with the DVD?

What version of the software do you have? Is it a Retail version, or did it come with a computer or optical drive?

I believe it's version 7.0 and I think it's a retail version. It's actually a part of a studio package I bought when a recording studio closed down and this is the first time I'm attempting to play with video. I took on a project with the understanding that I'd do it IF I figured out how to.

As a point of curiosity - do you have Internet Explorer 7 and/or Windows Media Player 11 installed?

Both those will cause all sorts of problems with 7, 7.5 and 8, so if you do, uninstall them, roll back to IE6 and WMP10 or 9 and reload EMC

There are updates, to EMC 7, here:

What happened when you renamed the extension on the files as I suggested in post #6 ?

"Try changing the extension from VOB to mpg and try again. It should take it."

I did try changing the extension as well with no luck. I'm really leaning toward the idea mentioned earlier that this was a corrupt DVD. I had a lot of various issues even coping the files. I ended up going with a DVD ripper program and had a hard time even getting it to rip the dvd. I ended up having to copy the files onto another computer, then rip the vob files from there to avi and they now work. Thanks for all the input. I do have one more question. I'm working on a project now and I'd like to completely do without the audio that's connected to the video file and put my own in. Is there a good way to do that?

Thanks,

Mike

Simply mute the native audio; add your own wav file to the music track. You can alternate two audio tracks and fade out/in the music.

Bring the .avi(s) file into VideoWave. In Video Editor, down below, right click on the .avi file, then on Edit. Select Native Audio, and when the next screen comes up, move the Overall volume slider, all the way to the left. Click OK.

Now, click on the Musical Note icon, (Add background audio to production), browse to whatever audio file you want, and bring it in. You may have to trim, or loop it, to get it to match whatever the length of your movie file is.

Cool. I got it.

Thanks again.
