Can't Create A Widescreen 16:9 Movie

MJ Healy

Question

It has failed me to create a movie in widescreen 16:9 format using Easy Creator 9 despite selecting 16:9 from the production drop down list option in VideoWave. Also, all my videos were recorded or captured in widescreen 16:9 mpeg2 mode. I even ran an SD copy beta program to ensure the flag setting was at 16:9 for the captured video. It just keeps producing a 4:3 format which is very annoying. I'm just wondering have other people encountered the same problem using this product. Incidently, I've managed to create a widescreen movie from the same video clips using other 3rd party software.

Furthermore, I'm recently getting a warning message in VideoWave with this error message: must contact our servers to activate this feature when trying to add mpeg2 codec files. When I click activate, it ends up with an invalid error key despite the fact that I successfully managed to registered product online. I checked my firewall setting to see if it was the problem. I even gave my Roxio application full control permission in my firewall but I'm still getting the same error message. As anybody out there encountered this problem.

I would welcome any suggestions to overcome these problems.

Thanks

MJ

Thanks for the reply. Like you mentioned, I will look at that 2nd last forum.

Thanks for the response. I've done precisely that but despite selecting 16:9 format on the New Production screen in VideoWave and adding my video, I'm still getting a 4:3 end product when I play the movie back. My videos were captured in widescreen 16:9 mode from my camcorder. I managed to create a widescreen movie using the same video footage using other 3rd party software. Any other suggestions!

Thanks

From what video camera, are those 16:9 movies? What type of video camera do you have? How are you getting them on the computer?

Also, what version of the software do you have? Is it the retail version, or did it come with a computer or DVD burner?

For Roxio's Macintosh equivalent (Toast v9), functionality for HD DVD and

Blu-ray (BDMV) video authoring requires addtnl purchase of the HD/BD plug-in.

For Roxio Creator, you may need to buy the HD/BD Plug-In as well:

It's very puzzling to me, too. By all rights, it should play correctly, on your set top DVD player. It certainly looks like you did everything right.

Thanks for all your input. Please note, I even changed the project settings in My DVD to 16:9 widescreen. As a result, the default menu background changed to widescreen view. Before burning the project, I previewed the whole project and it played correctly in widescreen mode. It just doesn't play back in widescreen mode on my DVD player connected to my TV. However, the burned project did play correctly in widescreen mode on my computer using various software. By the way, my DVD player does play other widescreen movies from other sources but just doesn't play my Roxio burned project in widescreen mode which is so frustrating. I have found that changing the screen type setting on my DVD player to either 16:9 or 4:3 makes no difference as it will display widescreen or 4:3 view automatically. Like I mentioned before, I have managed to create a widescreen movie from the same video footage using Movie Factory 6 and it played back perfectly in 16:9 widescreen mode on my DVD player.

To summarise briefly, I recorded my video in widescreen 16:9 mode. I took one video clip for testing purposes and I reset the flag setting to 16:9 widescreen using the SDcopy application recommended by Roxio support team. I opened the VideoWave application and selected 16:9 widescreen in the drop down list box for my new production. Then I added the video that was reset to 16:9 mode in VideoWave application. In VideoWave, the video played back correctly in 16:9 widescreen mode. Next, I saved the project. Then I entered My DVD application and opened the saved project. I changed the project settings in My DVD to 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio. Having done this, I noticed that the default menu background had changed to 16:9 widescreen view. I previewed the project before burning it and the whole project including the background menu and video clip played back correctly in widescreen 16:9 mode. Unfortunately, the burned project yielded the same 4:3 view end result on my DVD player. Incidently, I didn't even have to reset the flag setting to 16:9 on my video using Movie factory 6 as it just burned my movie correctly in widescreen mode. But I have noticed that the SDcopy application is advantageous if you want to play back your video content in widescreen mode on the computer. Also, worth mentioning that the PAL standard was choosen by default for my project and PAL is also supported by my DVD player. PAL is the recognised standard in Europe in my region. My DVD player also supports NTSC. Anyway, this problem is so frustrating as I have covered almost every angle at this stage and have eliminated many possibilities that may be causing this annoying problem. It was my intention to hand the burned movie to a friend for a wedding but it's unlikely I'm going to do it now as a 4:3 movie production is nearly obsolete nowadays and it would be quite embarrassing for me. This problem would definitely deter me from upgrading to Roxio Creator 2009.

No – nothing to do with what was being discussed…

No mention of HD or BD till you posted.

Where are you looking at the play back? There are many steps between Video Wave and a finished DVD but we don't know where you are having the problem.

As GPB says, you need also to select wide screen when you create a project in My DVD with the project file from Video Wave. Select the wide screen in My DVD before you add your video file/project.

I must admit that I haven't selected wide screen in My DVD. However, I have always selected widescreen in VideoWave. I recently tested this issue recently by working with a small video clip. I ran an SDcopy program recommended by Roxio Support to reset the video format to 16:9 flag. Then I tested it by looking at the converted video in Windows Media Player and Power DVD and it played correctly in 16:9 widescreen format. Next, I opened up VideoWave, and selected 16:9 from the production drop down list box and added my tested video clip to it. The video clip play correctly in 16:9 widescreen in the preview pane in VideoWave. Then I saved the production or project in VideoWave. Next, I opened My DVD and added the newly saved video production created from VideoWave. The video production played correctly in 16:9 widescreen format in My DVD preview window. Finally, I burned the project to a disc in My DVD. However, when I played the disc on my DVD player, it played the video in 4:3 format. This was so frustrating to see. Incidently, when I played the same video disc on my computer, it displayed the video correctly in 16:9 widescreen mode using Cyberlink Power DVD and Real Player. Please note, my TV's DVD player does play widescreen movies. In the DVD player settings, I even changed the video settings to 16:9 TV type but it made no difference. Like I mentioned before in a previous post, I have managed to create a 16:9 movie from the same video footage using a free trial of movie factory 6 software without ever having to run the SDcopy program. My video was recorded by default in perfect 16:9 widescreen format from my camcorder. When I even connect my camcorder to my TV using audio video cable it plays correctly in 16:9 widescreen. :angry2:

I think the fault must lay with the final step in Roxio i.e. My DVD. When it burns the video, it seems to encode it in 4:3 format. But having said that, the burned video plays back correctly in 16:9 widescreen mode on my computer using Power DVD, and Real Player software but not on my DVD player connected to my TV. I would like to remind you that prior to burning the tested video in My DVD application, I played back the video in My DVD and it displayed correctly in 16:9 mode without having to select 16:9 widescreen. Would the background menu introduction chapter in MyDvd have anything to do with this. If the background menu video was displayed in 4:3, could this be the cause of the problem. This problem is so frustrating at this stage. I would welcome any other suggestions.

As Roxio no longer support this legacy product, I can't contact their support team any longer.

Did you change your DVD player setting to 16:9?

Activation is required for mpeg2 codecs which has nothing to do with EMC 9 registration. This mpeg activation process has been a big headache for many users (it has been dropped for EMC 10 and Creator 2009) and it has its own forum. I think it's the 2nd last forum in the EMC 9 index list.

Did you change your DVD player setting to 16:9?

Thanks for replying. Yes, I did change my Sony DVD player setting to 16:9 screen type setting and it still only plays back in 4:3 though. Besides, I've noticed that changing the screen setting on the DVD player makes no difference. When I insert a burned DVD created from Movie Factory 6 trial using the same video footage, it plays perfectly in 16:9 screen. Also, I like to remind you that the burned DVD created from Roxio did play back in 16:9 widescreen on my computer using Power DVD and real player software except for the my background menu production intro screen which was in 4:3. It's very puzzling.

To create a production, of your widescreen movie, in VideoWave, click on File, then on New Production, then on Widescreen (16:9). Then, bring in your widescreen movie. Piece of cake.
