Burning Dvd's Or Formating With Vista

hartings

Question

I am trying to save (burn) photos to data DVD disk - this is not a backup but I want to give copies to my daughter!

I have a Dell Inspiron 530

32 bit

I have Windows Vista - which I think the combination of Vista/Roxio could be the problem.

I have made several attempts to copy these files as follows:

#1 - tried Roxio - 9

Make Data disk

added the files to be burned to disk -

Goes through the process and says "burning disk"

and just about the time it tries to reach completion an error comes up

"there was a problem burning disk"

It give me the options of try again - delete files - or save for later session - and tells me I need to use a different disk to try again.

I have used several brands of both +R and -R which according to my computer both are supported!

#2 tried using windows by loading disk and dragging files

used Mastered format option as well as Live

tried changing writing speeds

it adds data

writes files to disk

and while performing final steps

an error message pops up saying

"there was an error burning this disk"

#3 tried using Media Center Photo Gallery

same problems - but tries to format a disk as well and I get errors

"unable to format disk" when near the completion point

This is a brand new computer with brand new drive (Optiarc DVD+/- RW AD-5170S ATA) and I have successfully created photo movies and burned them to DVD - so I know my drive is working properly.

I believe it is a program problem between Roxio and Vista and I need help or somewone to point me in the right direction of where I can find the help.

Windows Vista has not been helpful and continues to refer me to Dell which refers me to Roxio.

It is a Easy Creator 9

I went to Dell Support and found an article that says "Technical Support for Inspirion 530 Microsoft Window Vista reports Sonic or Roxio software as Incompatible"

the instructions suggest that I uninstall and reinstall and that I uninstall the drag to disc feature - but when I go to programs and select uninstall it says to highlight "drag to disk" - there is no program in my computer under roxio called drag to disk!

I just made a video last night using roxio as a test and it worked - but found I cannot format or save data to CD either. I cannot copy photos to any form of CD or DVD by the looks of it, but can make movies so I am assuming the drive is OK - just a problem with the set up in my computer?

Can you help?

Again - is it Easy Media Creator 9 or Creator 2009 - both of these are two completely different things

The 'DE' version is as Walt said a cut-down version supplied by Dell which has parts missing

Thank you - I agree - but Vista sends me to Dell and Dell sends me to Roxio - i think you get the picture here - big run around - any other suggestions?

Anything I can look for in properties that might not be checked properly?

Could be simple user error as well - any computers for dummies suggestion?

If drag to disc is not there then you are using the built-in Vista packet writing and you have a problem with Vista

As I saiud, Drag to Disc is a separate module in EMC.

However, two things

Is it showing in the EMC 9 apps on the start menu? If so, you may have to do a clean install of EMC9 and do a custom install and deselect D2D

If it isn't - then the problem is not with EMC but with the built in Vista packet writing

Once again - what is EMC and how/where do I look for it under the start menu? - you are working with a DUMMY here - sorry

Do you know where I can find a how to or tutorial?

When I go to the start menu - under programs - the only folder it shows is Roxio Creator DE and when I click on that the only options it gives me is home or projects - and when I click on home it opens the program and when I click on Projects the list is Audio ,video, data, etc.

All the programs I have im my computer were pre-installed by DELL - I have not added or changed anything since I purchased this a few months ago.

Under the start button, all programs there should be a Sonic entry and also a Roxio one - it will probably be in Roxio

EMC = Easy Media Creator (I'm a lazy typist)

And for the record there is not a SONIC icon or folder available in case that was not understood in my last reply

When a company buys the rights to use software with their hardware (computer or burner), they also contract to provide support for it. Usually, they also modify it to their specifications - which generally means reduced features.

You have a Dell OEM [Original Equipment Mfgr] Version, which doesn't match up with any of the full release Versions, and that is where the confusion is happening.

More info on OEM here -

And for the record in case I did not mention this before - in the past I was successfully able to perform the task of copying photos to DVD or CD - now all of the sudden it is not working which makes me wonder if I accidentally checked or unchecked something in properties? anything I can look for?

When was "in the past"? Before Vista? With what program? It is really unclear what you have done or are doing!

I purchased my computer in July of 2008 and since then have not added or deleted any programs (except my HP printer) etc. I have just been a user! In Sept and October I made copies of photos on DVD (Maxell DVD-R) for my aunt who was visiting - I did not have a problem then and I have also copied to CD in the interim. Last week I started my attempt ot copy some life photos of my daughter to give to her at Christmas time and nothing has worked since - I get "unable to format" "failed to start the image writing operation" "there was a problem burning the disk" errors.

And it is almost as if it just wont close the disk because it gets 97% complete and burning image at 99% and then "there was a problem burning the disk"

In one case it acted as if the disk was dirty - cleaned it - tried again no luck!

But same situation and tried to make a video DVD - same day - same disks and - no problem!

I have gone through over 30 DVD's of various types : Maxell - Verbatum, etc, +R, -R and still the only thing I am able to do is create a DVD video.

If the drive was dirty it seems as though it would not be able to create a video - maybe I am wrong - or if something was wrong with the drive why can I create a video?

'Unable to format' suggests with 99.99% certainty that you are using packet writing - and that is built in to Vista.

The Roxio version was called 'Drag to Disc' (D2D' for short) and was problematic in Vista due to conflict with Vista's own software.

It does sound more and more as if the problem is actually in the Operating System rather than in the application

Is there an application called "Creator Classic" as part of the Roxio program you have? Are you using that to burn the photo files to the disc? If not then that is what you should be using. Using programs that require formatting of discs will eventually lead to problems.

Not sure if this info is helpful but - when I go to "Uninstall programs" I have more options for "Roxio" then i do in the start menu.

Here are my options:

Roxio Creator Audio

Roxio Creator BDAV Plugin

Roxio Creator Copy

Roxio Creator Data

Roxio Creator DE

Roxio Creator Tools

Roxio Express Labler

Roxio MyDVD DE

Roxio Update Manager

No sonic programs or D2D

Not sure why these do not show in my start - programs menu????

And when I try to copy photos to a disk I have tried several different methods -

#1 I click on the icon on my desktop called Roxio Creator Home

a window pops up titled Roxio Creator DE

it give me several options:

Audio

Backup

Copy

Data

Photo

Video

Tools

I click on data - then click on data disk

add folders - also tried adding just files - but I prefer my sorted folders

and then I get the 97% complete - burning image and then nothing!

If it is an OS syestem error - I am assuming you are suggesting I go to Vista - which keeps telling me to go to Dell which I have got nowhere with thus far

This is the most help I have had in a week :(

not sure if this is helpful - but just tried again and this is what I get:

Project running

(stops) error

There was a problem writing to the disc

You can try again by clicking retry - you will need another blank disc ready

I click on "explain"

"errors occur when a disc contains dirt etc."

I clean a new disk and same thing (wipe with soft cloth I use for my glasses)

I click on "advanced"and this is what it says:

Sense:03 ASC:13 ASCQ: 03 (command 2A)

Px.dll: 3.2.52.500

PxAFS.DLL: 3.2.52.500

Pxdrv.dll: 1.1.99.0

PxMas.dll: 3.2.52.500

PxSFS.DLL: 3.2.52.500

PXWave.dll: 3.2.52.500

Pxwma.dll:1.0.0.3

does this mean anything?

Not sure if this info is helpful but - when I go to "Uninstall programs" I have more options for "Roxio" then i do in the start menu.

Would defragging my computer do any good?

Try a different brand of media - that's usually associated with a bad batch of discs

http://forums.techguy.org/multimedia/36199...vd-burning.html

Also, check this MS KB article

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...b;en-us;Q320174

That might (but probably doesn't) have a bearing on what you are experiencing.

What brand of media are you using?

What version of the software do you have? There is no such program as Roxio 9. There is a program package called Easy Media Creator 9 and a new package called Roxio Creator 2009.

Did the program come with your Dell computer? If yes then you have an OEM version of the software and some of the features of the full retail version have been disabled.

What application from the package are you using to burn the data files? You should be using Creator Classic if it is available in the version you have.

What DVD media are you using? There may be incompatibilities between your burner and the DVD discs. Verbatim are among the most reliable makes.

Once a burn to a disc has started and you experience a problem that disc is a coaster and cannot be used anymore (unless you used RW discs in which case you need to erase it before it can be used again).

If you have problems burning the disc using Windows then you have non-Roxio related problems with your burner.

Thank you for your response and in answer to your questions:

I have Creatr 9 which came with my NEW DELD desktop computer.

To use it I simply click on the icon on my desktop called CREATOR HOME

it allows me to select from "Creator DE"

create a Data disk and I follow the prompts

I use Verbatum and Maxell both + and - I have tried as well as a variety of other DVD's (30+ have already become coasters in an attempt to cure the problem) - regardless of the manufacturer they all fail - hence I do not believe it is a DVD problem.

On the other hand I have no problem creating a DVD Video using Roxio - clicking on the same icon and going to create a video with MY DVD

So if the drive is working

And the DVD's are not the problem

The problem has to be with one of my programs-

ROXIO or VISTA or the combination of the 2

could it be something as simple as enable or disable is not checked properly in the drive properties? If so what do I look for?

I use a computer a lot - but mainly to perform simple tasks - Office pkgs - store print etc. media/music/video and for email - so I am not a guru - but we do have 5 computers in our home for work/office - 3 of which are DELL and the only one I have a problem with is my new desktop with VISTA - XP seems to be running OK - but I do not want to have to continually transfer items to another computer just so I can copy them to a DVD.

Once again - thank you for your help!

PS - Vista has not been very helpful and according to the searches I have done thus far - many, many users are experiencing the same problem - can we all have bad drives or DVD's?

Is there an update I might be missing ? I have looked but am unsure which one to use if so - once again - not a guru
