Why Does Toast Change The Size Of Movie?

capt. jon

Question

Hello all. I'm having a problem with my aspect ratios. I've edited a movie in Final Cut Express, finishing it my saving it as a QT movie. The .mov file is 1024x576 which is what i want. However, when i import it into Toast it says the size is 716x574. I didn't notice so burnt one disc with the incorrect size.

When using the custom settings and telling it to use 16:9, it still shows as 716x574 in the main window - why?

If i burn it will it burn it to the correct aspect ratio even though it shows differently in the main window?

I'm short of time so only have time for one burn...

If you are wanting a standard-definition video DVD and Toast failed to make it 16:9 (your image looks vertically stretched) even when choosing the 16:9 setting in Toast, then I can tell you how to fix the IFO so it plays correctly at 16:9.

That would be great.

I was hoping I'd be off the hook on this one. Oh well....

Go to mydvdedit.com and download the donation-ware MyDVDEdit application.

Drag to the Finder the VIDEO_TS folder from the burned DVD or from a mounted disc image. When that is complete select the VIDEO_TS folder and choose Get Info from the File menu. At the bottom click the padlock icon to unlock it. Now change the permissions to Read & Write. You want to apply this change to the entire contents of the folder. As I recall you're asked this automatically, possibly when you close the get info window.

Open MyDVDEdit and choose the VIDEO_TS folder in the Open command. Select VTS 1 in the left-side window. Click VTS 1 in the middle-left of the lower window. You'll now see where you can edit the IFO file to play the movie in a specific aspect ration. For anamorphic 16:9 sources go ahead and choose the last option.

If you have multiple titles on the DVD (i.e. VTS 2 and so on), do the same for the others.

Now choose Save. This completes the edit.

You can preview the edited VIDEO_TS folder with DVD Player by choosing Open DVD Media in DVD Player's File menu and selecting the VIDEO_TS folder. If all is okay you can burn it to DVD using the setting for VIDEO_TS folders in the Toast Video window.

Are you trying to create a Blu-Ray DVD?

A PAL video standard-definition DVD cannot be larger than 720x576. Anything larger than that is beyond the spec so it wouldn't play in a DVD player. The 16:9 aspect ratio is accomplished via the anamorphic process.
