Problem With Chapters Tab Order

SteelersFAN

Question

Hello, I have what would appear to be a simple issue but I just can’t get it resolved.

I have Roxio Creator 2009 Ultimate. When using MyDVD to create chapters from movies, I want the very first chapter automatically selected as the default when the chapter menu displays so when the Play button is clicked the movie begins playing from the beginning. I have set the “Default button” setting to “1”, which I understand to be the button that represents the first chapter. It works fine in the Preview window, but when the DVD is created the default is always the “home” button. I must have missed something simple. I also want to make sure that the “tab order” of the chapters goes from 1 – n in numerical order. And that seems to be a problem too. Sometimes the tab order is all over the place. Any help would be very much appreciated!

I am an IT professional (Senior Software Engineer) with over 20 years of experience in the industry. And I also have 2 Computer Science degrees. So I’m VERY comfortable with software. But for the life of me I just can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong. Probably “over thinking” the problem. LOL!

I want to thank all in advance for your help. This is the first time I have used this suite of products and I am VERY impressed with what it can do. But the downside to software that can SO much is that it can do SO much – and it takes a while to figure everything out. But that’s a problem I can live with. This thing is The BOMB! :D:D:D

Thank you, SteelersFAN.

Hello DG,

Thank you very much for the very detailed response. I apologize if my post may have used the wrong vernacular. Let me try and do a better job of explaining my 2 issues.

First, I have a MyDVD, DVD with menu project. It consists of 3 mpg video clips that I had made originally with a different software package before I owned the Roxio suite. I added these to the main, top-level menu. I then went into the Edit Chapters feature for each mpg video, and manually added 6-8 chapters for each mpg. These chapters appear on a separate menu, under the main, top-level menu, for each mpg. Ex:

Main Top-Level Menu

Mpg clip1

Mpg clip1 Chapter menu

Chapter 1

Chapter 2

Chapter 3

Mpg clip2

Mpg clip2 Chapter menu

Chapter 1

Chapter 2

Chapter 3

Mpg clip3

Mpg clip3 Chapter menu

Chapter 1

Chapter 2

Chapter 3

What I want to have happen is to have “Chapter1” highlighted when I navigate to any of the 3 chapter menus (Mpg clip1 Chapter menu, Mpg clip2 Chapter menu, Mpg clip3 Chapter menu) as the “default button”. Then I would also like to be able to click the “right” navigation button on the DVD remote and have each successive chapter (2,3,4,etc.) be the next chapter that the navigation moves to.

I hope this makes more sense. And I sure hope the STEELERS beat the cowgirls today. But man, I have to be honest and say Big Ben just doesn’t give me a lot of confidence these days. Seems like he just hasn’t been the same since the motorcycle accident.

Thanks again for all your help!

I tried to indent the menu structure, but it didn't stay that way when the post went up. :(

Thank you, SteelersFAN.

Interesting, I had to reread your post several times to understand what you are asking. I have a few questions.

First let's make sure that we are on the same page. A chapter is a location in one video much like a chapter in a book. A movie is a Video Wave file; a slide show or edited video or it could be a video file like an mpg2 video. Is that your understanding?

Do you want a menu? If not, select that as the project type and the first movie will play as soon as the disc is put into the player and will continue until all the movies are played. How many movies do you have in your project?

When you say tabs, I assume you are referring to movies. Add them to the menu in the order you want them. Moving them around later may result in navigation problems and may cause them to play out of order.

I'm not sure that you can start playing a movie at a chapter point from the main menu; I think you will always have to go to the chapter page to select the start point.

Are you seeing the problems with the navigation on your home DVD player? Try this, when you go to burn, encode (render, burn) to an ISO file. The project will be encoded as necessary and the additional items will be added to enable it to play on a home DVD unit. Download and run that ISO file in the free VLC player. If you have problems with the navigation there, you may have run into a software limitation. If the navigation does work OK, then you have identified the player as the culprit.

You can later just copy the ISO file to a blank disc. That will go rather quickly since is is a straight copy with no encoding. You can save and use that ISO file to make as many copies of the entire project as you want. An added advantage is that the ISO file methid separates the encoding from the burning so the computer is only doing one task at a time. This typically results in a more universally accepted home burned disc.

Think they will beat the Cowboys today? (another Steeler fan).
