Resize Photos

Klas

Question

I have spent some time reviewing the "help topics" and "discussion boards" on the subject of 'resizing photo's' = however, my question is: when you are in Roxio PhotoSuite, Under the Tab 'Fix Your Photos' and you click on the 'resize icon' is there any way to tell what size of MB or KB you are adjusting the original picture to prior to saving the photo?

This may not be the best way to 'save an individual' photo from it's original size - if not can someone advise or insert a link via a reply that describes the procedure?

What I am trying to do is save the pictures to around 1MB before moving to a CD or DVD - we are just amateur photographers trying to save picutres of our children on our PC and not use up a ton of our Harddrive Space prior to buring the pictures to a CD or DVD.

Appreciate any tips or advise you may have on this subject.

I did notice that resize option that you put in an image of above - however, I have not been able to use the "pixels" dropdown menu option - which was my first choice when trying to 'resize' a photo. Apparently the only two options Roxio Creator 2009 allows for resizing is:

1) Dragging the resize handles along the box of the photo

OR

2) Type in a new size

What is frustrating is that both options do not show a person the 'size' of that photo prior to saving it - late yesterday the person in Tech Support I contacted advised these are the only two ways to resize a photo. He stated that a person has to continue to save the photos until they get the size they are wanting to obtain, which can be several saves and tons of time.

A simple add-on of allowing a person to see the size in MB or KB while using either current resize option would be a plus for this program.

Anyone know if I am missing a feature to show the size prior to saving?

Thanks again to everyone for the view and posts.

Perhaps I don't know what you are asking. Do you want to make an image a size (length by width) or do you want to make it a certain number pf pixels?

If you chose the dimensions, then you have an image that size. If you set the number of pixels, then just multiple the number of pixels in one direction by the number of pixels in the other.

Unless you are playing around with several cameras and adjusting the resolution on each, they should always be about the same size initially.

Why can't you use the pixel settings?

You are confusing photo size and file size for the photo. C2009 does not have an option to set the photo file size and as has been mentioned there are no programs that have such an option. I don;t know how usefull such an option would be since the file size is dependent on the photo size and the quality of the picture you choose. When you use "Save As" to save a photo (whether you made any changes or not), you have an option to change the quality of the photo while keeping the same size of photo. You could play around with that option to get your file size into the region you want.

In your reply "Perhaps I don't know what you are asking. Do you want to make an image a size (length by width) or do you want to make it a certain number pf pixels?" that unfortunately is my fault = as Myguggi stated in his reply "You are confusing photo size and file size for the photo." and that once again is me not stating correctly what I was asking the forum for help on.

However, SKNIS - your statement of "If you set the number of pixels, then just multiple the number of pixels in one direction by the number of pixels in the other." makes sense - I should have an idea of what 'file size' the picture would be saved in after 'resizing the picture. But, for whatever reason I can not get the program to allow the drop down menu on the Pixels to open up and/or display. I have sent a ticket to Tech Support on that matter and another that I found out trying to copy data files - When trying to use the icon on the Home Tab 'Burn Data Disc' under the Frequent Task no program opens up as the Tutorial shows will happen. I have uninstalled Roxio Creator 2009 and did a fresh install and neither the drop down menu or the Burn Data Disc is operating.

Not a fun experience with this new product :(

Once again, thank you for the replies, advise and time on this matter.

Multiplying the Number of pixels in one direction by the # in the other direction does really not mean anything. I have a photo at 1600x1200 pixels and it shows a file size of 563Kb while the multiplication gives 1.9MB In fact the file size for the same resolution photos range from 220kb to 880 kb. THe file size depends on a lot of factors not just # of pixels.

You say you did a fresh install, was that a clean uninstall/install as recommended?

That would be a big mistake. Burn them off to CD/DVD's – get an external HD – get a bigger HD – just do anything but what you are asking!

Making them smaller will reduce the quality. When your kids grow up they will be disappointed with your low quality when they send them to their Wall Screen…

Jim -> I can appreciate what you mentioned = More Hard Drive and an External Hard Drive. We have 320 GB of HD and 85 GB of an external HD. My concern is we take so many pictures, I keep them on our PC HD so folks can view them when they come over - was hoping to instead of constantly: a) updating the External Hard Drive with new pictures and B) putting more CD/DVD's in our vault --- it would be nice to just resize the picutures on the PC HD.

Many folks have stated to me in person the same as you have in the reply which maybe our only real solution. As what hits home is the quality of the pictures that may be lost by downsizing them.

However, I must ask - do you (or does anyonoe else) know if Roxio Creator 2009 has any program feature to show the size of the photo when you resize them, prior to saving them?

As we have tried to convey and as we have tried to give you alternatives, there is no simple way of doing what you want to do.

OK, try this to see if it gives you something that you can use. You will still have to experiment with the quality setting but one you have established that, you can use that as the default for multiple and future images. Remember you are changing the quality of the image. so you may want to make duplicates for the lower resolution.

From Creator 2009 home page, select "Enhance Multiple Photos". Add your photos and select them. On the left, go to the "Convert" tab. See image below for more information.

Walt = yes, I did a uninstall and reinstall of C2009 with no improvements on the matter of: trying to copy data files - Still, when trying to use the icon on the Home Tab 'Burn Data Disc' under the Frequent Task - No program opens up as the Tutorial shows will happen.

Sknis = I have tried your example prior to my post on Friday.

It is apparent there is no feature to view the photo size of the file which is what I was hoping to find out.

Instead I will use the suggestions mentioned above on using proper quality and size of the photo file - thank you!

Per your request; you can resize according to in, cm or pixels.
