JVC Mod Files and Installation

PatrickCA

Question

I purchased Roxio Creator 2009 because the flexibility of the program seemed to fit my needs. The download of the DVD software was interrupted by a window that told me I needed Easy Media Creator 10. The installation 'rolled back' and left my cheese dangling in the breeze.

I need software that converts the .MOD files of my camcorder (JVC Everio GZ-MG330) to a file type that Windows Movie Maker recognizes. Or, a program that can support .MOD files to create video for uploads.

I just want something that WORKS. My camera has a 30GB hard drive and a slot for a Micro SD card. Am I better off just using a tiny SD card that (as adverised on the box) records video in the MPEG2 format?

1) read the pinned post at the top of this forum.

2) read the tips and trick in EMC 10 and Creator 9 about your JVC camera sorry I could not find the post I was looking for. Here is a Kb article that says that the camera and file is supported. How did you get the mod files off your camera an into your computer?

3) does that camera record video to the card? Many record images to a memory card; video is recorded on the primary medium. If it does and you can get a big enough memory card, mpg2 is already DVD compliant so here would be fewer conversions (My Camcorder records to mpg2 in HD and it is great).

The default setting of my JVC camera records to the 30GB hard drive. I didn't change it.

My camera's menu offered an option for 'back-up'. The .MOD files were saved to my C: drive (JVC's software preferred to to call it 'My Works' and placed the files on my hard drive). Playback is perfect on Windows Media Player. However, Windows Movie Maker cannot import the files, because they are not saved as a recognized format.

I truly appreciate your time and effort. Thank you for taking the time to address my questions.

If you are recording in 4:3, all you need to do is change the file extension to .MPG and just about any video editor will read the file - including Windows Movie Maker. However if you are shooting in widescreen, JVC did not follow the standard MPG header so applications don't recognize the files as widescreen. Check this pinned post in EMC 10. There is a small free app that can fix the file and transfer the files, too.

I'm fairly sure that I was recording in 16:9. I may very well be mistaken. I definitely remember seeing that option in my camera's menu.

I don't recall seeing an option to change file formats to MPG2, though.

I'm just smart enough to press the record button, but not wise enough to know what to do with the file(s) when I'm done.

If you are shooting in widescreen, definitely download the small app at that link above. Very easy to use and it works great. It will transfer the files from the camcorder, fix the 16:9 flag issue and rename the extension all in one easy step. Plus change filename with the date shot if you choose.
