Audio

Question

I am a newbee to Roxio Creator 2009 and have tried for 2 days to get an audio transfer. Here are my details: Windows XP, Sony Digital video camera using a USB connection to the computer. This is an older video camera with digital Hi 8 tape. I get audio when I hook up to the TV. Video looks great on Computer after capture but no sound. I have looked at past posts but cannot get this to work. Any help would be appreciated or direct me to a previous post.

I will get a firewire. One last question, does a firewire transfer both audio and video?

Yes it does, however…

Make sure your camcorder has a Firewire output! (probably a 4 pin mini)

Then make sure your PC has a Firewire or 1394 input (mini on laptops usually a 6 pin on desktops)

Then make sure you get the right cable that meets your needs.

You should be using a Firewire connection capture from a DV (tape) camcorder. USB gives incorrect results if it works at all.

...but you can use an Analog to Digital (A/D) converter that connects from the camera to the computer. Roxio sells one, Pinnacle sells several, you can check online for one of these devices.

My Sony has a 4 pin jack that is rectangular in shape with letters DV above it. I will check out the computer to see what I have to match per your suggestions. Thanks for your info.

If you don't have a firewire input, on your computer, then you can always pick up a firewire card to put into your computer. They are relatively inexpensive.

You can check to see if you do have a firewire input by looking at the back of your computer, or go to Device Manager, and see if there is anything listed under IEEE 1394 Bus host controllers.

Also, don't buy a cheap firewire cable. I bought a Belkin cable, for about $35 U.S., and it has worked out well.

I have a 1394 input on the front of my computer so I should be all set. Plan is to get to the store today and pick up what I need. I saw on MyCableMart.com, 3', 4 pin cables for $4. Are these to cheap? I have used one of their HDMI cables which were a lot cheaper than the retail stores, without any problems.

You can try it to see if it works. I usually abide by the "buy cheap, buy twice" theory. :)
