sctt65

Question

I have roxio creator 9. My computer is 2.0gig dual core pentium processor with 4gigs of ddram and 3 gigs of cache. 250gig hard drive. why does it take roxio 6-10 hours to burn a single movie? sometimes longer? is this normal? I have other progrms that can burn a movie btw 30 min. to 1 hour....but i cant edit in those programs. any help or am I outta luck.

Thanks

ok thanks......I will let you know how it works....

Thanks Syrallas....I used videowave in software rendering and it only took 1 hr 15 minutes and it worked great. So, this leaves me to wonder.....why would you use Copy and Convert? Next time, I will try rendering with hardware and see what the difference is. Thanks again.

For some people, when they make a slide show and use software render, they have problems with transitions and effects. Those with newer hardware don't have that problem often but the suggestion by Syrallas is a good one and one I should have remembered but I don't have a problem with using hardware render.

This info should be listed in a sticky somewhere (unless it already is).

Why would you use V&C if you are doing editing? If you are creating a DVD you should be using myDVD to create the iso file and then use V&C to copy the iso file to the DVD.

BTW, I hope you are not getting these video movies from peer-to-peer sites via limewire (or similar programs) since that is illegal and usually results in spyware/malware and virus downloads along with the movie

My main dvd usage is record sporting events of my son. I download them from my harddrive recorder to my computer then burn them to dvd for his future viewing. I also make dvd copies of my families home movies. Also make backup copies of movies that I have purchased.

Backing up your purchased movies is illegal. If you want to edit out your last sentence, I will delete my post.

I assume you mean encode (which is what occurs before the DVD is actually burned).

Assuming your movie is 1 hour or longer, yes, that encoding length of time is in the normal range.

I agree that the time frame is too long but, what type of files are you using to start with? divx and xvid files are highly compressed and need to be made DVD compliant to be turned into a true dvd and that takes time. I have a slower system and mine doesn't take that long. Usually twice the time of the complete video is my average.

I suggest you try burning to an image file first and then when complete, use Video Copy & Convert to the burn the ISO to a dvd. I find it more successful that way but it might also be faster.

One other note is that some other programs may create a lower quality project and encode faster. I've found MyDVD projects to be very good quality and that too might be the reason it's taking you so long.

Also, are you using hardware or software for rendering in MyDVD? Software is quicker for me, but your results may vary. My times are not unlike yours, again assuming a movie with a length of 1-2 hours. If less than 30 minutes, I'm w/ Beerman and something may need to be tweaked.

6-10 hours seems to be excessively long for your system unless you have lots of other applications running. A 1 hour moview should take from 2-4 hours generally to render, actually burning should be failry quick.

You have not given much information to offer help such as type of source files, running software or hardware render, video card, etc

10 hours for a1 hour movie is much to long. I have a "slow" system and I can encode a 90 minute movie from wmv in less then 3 hours

Yes they are usually divx or xvid files. Can I use Roxio to burn to an image file or .iso, then Video Copy and Convert to a dvd? Or do I need another program to convert to .iso? Sorry..I am a novice to this

That is definitely faster than mine. My long projects are typically Batman episodes I am (slowly) trying to convert from vhs / TVLand to DVD w/o commercials.

Its usually 22 minutes * 6 episodes / dvd or a little over 2 hours / disc. (I know, drop in quality. ). The encoding part is an all-nighter, about 7 plus hours. Yes, 1o hours for 1 hour is too long. Hopefully op will let us know how long his production / movie is.

Yes, use MyDVD to encode an iso, then Copy & Convert to burn the image to a disc like Paul / B'man said in his post.

How long is your movie?

My movies r usually ur typical 90mins to 120 mins. I m trying to get my video card info....I know its about 1.5gigs of memory. Oh...and I do have all other programs shut down, including virus programs.....and theres no change in encoding times

I think you can use Video Copy and Convert in Compilation mode to burn those to avi's to dvd but you don't have as much control with the outcome. Still, it might be worth a try to see if it's any quicker.

Older versions of Roxio had something called DivxtoDVD which was quicker but the quality was not as good as MyDVD when using large file sizes. The smaller files I tried came out ok.

What is the source of these movies and in what format is the video?

By source they are downloads if thats what ya mean. Formats are avi, divx, xvid and sometimes the mpeg family. All seem to take the same amount of time to encode. I just think 10 hours is pretty extensive for a single movie.

Thanks for the info.

Although 10 is long for a 2 hour long movie, i don't think 6 hours is -- at least I haven't in the past w/ me.

As I said a little earlier, a possible way to speed it up is try switching from hardware rendering to software rendering (or maybe vice-versa).
