Please Help: Destination Drive Issue And Iso Question

vokhal

Question

apologies if these questions have been posted/answered already, but i spent all weekend getting new software and trying different ways to create a DVD (that is watchable in a stand alone player) from two WMV files. at first i was using Nero Express that produced a DVD with video, but no audio for the full 2 hours. long story short, this is why i switched to roxio myDVD, which worked great!

but i had an old version of myDVD (v. 4.5), and it could only use up to the standard DVD-R 4.7 GB disc (which with roxio only allowed me to burn one of the WMV files....half of the movie). so that's why i upgraded to roxio myDVD 10 premier in order to avoid splitting the movie onto 2 different DVDs. myDVD 10 has been great and i'm so glad that it is compatible with DVD+R DL b/c now i only have to use one DVD for my 1 hour 53 minute movie (that is approximately 8 GBs). so what's the problem, you ask? here is issue and my TWO questions....and sorry it took so long to get to them, but i thought some background would be helpful.

ISSUE:

when i went to burn my 8 GB movie directly onto my DVD+R DL via myDVD 10, it kept giving me the following error message: "DESTINATION DRIVE DOES NOT HAVE ENOUGH SPACE..." and it wouldn't even start the encoding process, it just gives me the error message upfront and i have to hit "cancel" to the burn process.

so i ended up having to burn the movie directly to my hard drive (which had plenty of space) as an image (ISO) file. the ISO file size is also 8 GBs, so i'm assuming no quality of features (i.e. audio) were lost. when i double-clicked on the ISO file, it opened up the roxio burn software and prompted me to "burn image file onto DVD." so i did that successfully. now for the TWO questions.....

Question ONE:

now that i've burned the ISO file onto my DVD+R DL, will i be able to view/hear it in my stand alone DVD player? (which is compatible with that DVD format....i already checked). i'm mainly concerned about video quality and MOSTLY about the audio actually working throughout the movie (as you can see, Nero has scared me for life).

Question TWO:

is there a way to fix the "destination drive does not have enough space" issue so that i can burn directly to my DVD in the future instead of having to save it as an image (ISO) file on my hard drive first? i was trying to find the answer online, and am gathering that it's an issue of deleting some temp files/creating more memory space on my C: drive. is that correct?

thank you to whoever answers this. your help is GREATLY appreciated! and sorry this post is so long.

To answer the first question, try it, on your set top DVD player. It should work, if you didn't burn it to the disc as data.

Also, you used .wmv files, which are low quality to begin with. You aren't going to improve that quality by burning to a DVD.

Second question. If you are near 2 hours, video time, you will get that message. Most of us here, would recommend burning to an .iso file, no matter the time length of the video, then burn to a DVD, with Video Copy and Convert. That's what you did, and that is still the best practice.

thanks grandpabruce! i think i just needed a confirmation that i was doing the right thing. i'm fairly new to all this media movie making! i had to rush to work this morning, so i couldn't actually wait for the ISO file to finish burning onto the DVD. so i can't check if it actually works. but i will have my room mate check and i should be able to confirm within an hour.

regarding your answer to my "Question ONE," i wasn't sure if i did actually do the whole conversion process b/c again i was rushing out of the house this morning. so i'm guessing that when i double-clicked on the ISO file it automatically launched VCC? and i'm pretty sure i didn't burn to the disc as data....at least it didn't give me that option when i clicked burn.

on a side note, do you know if myDVD 10 recognizes AVI file formats for movie importing? instead of using the two WMV files, i found the same movie in AVI format that has the entire movie. combined, the two WMV files are about 8GB, and the one AVI file is 7GB (again, it has the whole movie on it instead of in two parts)....that said, does that mean that the AVI is lower quality than the WMV? i can't tell b/c i can't actually see the video when i try to play it using windows media. which leads me to my final issue....

when i view the AVI file via windows media, i can hear everything perfectly but i have no video. it says that i need to install a codec. i've had this problem before, so i know that windows media doesn't recognize AVI files properly. is the codec install the solution? or is there another work around? or should i just use one of the roxio programs to view the AVI? (if that's even possible).

thanks for all of your help grandpabruce!

p.s. -- the codec application i downloaded is XviD-1.1.3-27042008.exe

P.P.S. -- SUCCESS!!! i just called my room mate and she verified that it's working...audio/video and all! i can't tell you how excited i am by all this. i literally spent ALL weekend working through Nero's kinks and using myDVD only to have to upgrade the software to be able to use the DVD DL and i even bought a new internal drive that has a faster write speed. so needless to say i am totally thrilled that all of my hard work and weekend spent was not in vain. regarding my most recent post to you, however, i'm still interested in any solutions/answers you have regarding the AVI questions. thanks again!!

When you initially tried to burn to a DVD DL disc did you also select a DL disc as your output as well as Best quality.

In general avi is better quality then wmv but then there are also different flavours of avi (DivX, Xvid for example).

I hope you are not downloading from peer-to-peer sites using programs such as Limewire because that is a sure-fire way to pick up a virus, spyware, malware, etc.

nope! no P2P sites. thanks for checking though. so does myDVD recognize AVI formats for movie importing? if so, i will definitely redo my movie using the AVI version and burn to DVD DL.

regarding your first question though, i think you are referring to when i tried to burn to the DVD DL using myDVD but received the "destination drive..." error message. correct? if so, yes, i did select the DL disc as my output as well as best quality. and it still said i didn't have the space....hence, i had to create the ISO file. when i create the ISO file with the new AVI format file, i shouldn't have any conversion issues, right?

That error message indicates that the video you are creating is too big to fit even on the DL DVD. By going the iso route you should be creating a afile that is larger then a DL disc but when you use Video COpy& Convert, the iso file is transoded to fit on the DL DVD.

The format of the source file has no effect on the size of any final file. Avi or mpeg will produce the same result
