Aspect Ratio Problems

I'm having a problem with aspect ratios in VideoWave. I am using a Panasonic SDR-H18 (hard disk drive video camera) filming all my footage in 16:9 aspect ratio. There is no question that the footage on the camera is 16:9, however when I download it to my computer and try to edit it in VideoWave, the footage shows up squished as 4:3.

In the initial dialogue box I select 16:9 for the project, however the video shows up with the black bars on either side of the video image. Also I have found a setting that allows the 4:3 image to be stretched out to 16:9, however this isn't a true representation of the original footage because it is taking the 4:3 image and stretching it to 16:12 and cutting off some top and bottom to fit it into 16:9.

Does anybody have any suggestions to fix this problem? Many thanks in advance.
