Video Capture Usb Not Working... Or Is It My Camera?

Hi, we just got the Roxio Creator 2009 w/video capture usb from Costco for Christmas. This is our first time trying to install & use it, and so far we have not had any luck! I've installed it on both my laptop & main desktop computer at home and get the same results with both (running xp sp2.)

 

My camera is a sony Hi-8 record, and we're trying to digitize all of our 8mm tapes. I've followed all directions that I can find posted on this forum, but am getting very frustrated. I generally receive a "Status: No Signal", but it may flip around to a "Signal Protected" error and sometimes may even say "Ready to Capture".

 

Regardless, what I see & hear in the preview box remains the same. My audio has a buzzing sound and my video looks like what you would see on a very old tv set where you can't fix the tuner (the picture is distorted, discolored, dark, and the frames "flip".) I've tried various settings in the options box & nothing seems to change what I see. I even tested the capture and got the same results in Movie Maker. If there was a way to attach the movie clip, I could show you an example.

 

Any suggestions?? I've wasted so much time and feel like I just wasted my money, too! Any help is appreciated!!

There is a recent service pack for Creator 2009 that may have updated drivers for the USB capture device. You will want to download and install that SP2. Those updated drivers may be your cure.

 

Also put that USB device on the back of your computer; the ones in the front may not have enough power for it to work correctly. Also don't plug it into a hub. What format are you trying to capture? Are you trying to capture to your system hard drive or to an external disk.

 

Please post your computer specs; we may be able to offer some ideas based on the computers your have.

When I installed the software I downloaded and installed the patch that I was prompted to install as well. I don't know if that was the SP2 you were referring to or not. Also, I tried the usb in the back of the computer and still no changes. I have an older computer with specs as follows...

 

HP Pavilion AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3700+, 2.20 GHz, 960 MB of RAM, Windows XP Media Center Edition Version 2002, SP2

Does anyone else have any suggestions for me? The only way I could capture my (very bad) movie was in Movie Maker. Roxio won't let me capture anything because it pretty much stays on the "No Signal" error. I need HELP! Thanks!!!

If it works perfectly in Move Maker then there is a problem with your software install…

 

You will need to go through the Clean Install - XP

 

The trick to Clean Install is to print it out so it is by your side and follow it step by step using the More or Less method. (Don't do More than it says and don't do Less!)

Actually, the video doesn't come out correctly with either software programs, I'm just able to capture the bad output in Movie Maker. Is there a way I could tell if my usb device is defective? Maybe I should download a new driver in case the driver is bad on my install disk?? It seems like many others are having problems with the driver, too (albeit with different symptoms.)
