Catalog Movie Segments

CTM99

Question

I hope someone may have gone through something similar and can give me some tips or point to a good web page.

I have EMC10, but haven't used it much yet. I have 20 years worth of family VCR and 8mm tapes. I've already captured my roughly 30 8mm tapes to AVI files on a large hard drive. I recently found an inexpensive box to dub from VCR to DVD. Seems to work nicely. Not doing any editing yet. My thought is to capture my VCR/DVD's to the same hard drive.

The tapes have 5 to 20 different segments each. I originally thought I'd need to extract each segment to a separate file. But maybe I should just make different projects pointing at each segment. ??

Later I'd like to create "theme-based" movies based on activities, dates, people involved, etc. Is there any way to make a catalogue of some sort so for example I could find all movie segments that involve "Soccer, Tom and Joe". I can create a small database app of my own if need be, but better if there's something in EMC 10 that can be used.

I know one can make a compilation of various sections of various files. Can one also combine several earlier projects?

Thanks for any help.

Chris

In answer to your last question, no, not as projects; you would have to output them to file sections as AVI or mpg2 and then add those into a subsequent project.

In answer to your first question, depends on the version of EMC 10 that you have. There is a application that will catalog what is on each disc. I don't have EMC 10 installed but look for it. In Creator 2009 is in in the tools menu "Catalog your discs". You will have to break up those AVI files into segments and name them according to whatever you want. You can then burn the avi files to data discs and then catalog those discs.

It seems like a lot of work but it may be something you can use. I hope that makes sense.
