Cd Spin Dr 6 Refuses To Record

John_D

Question

Hello all. CD Spin Dr 6.01 refuses to record from my USB turntable. I've set everything up exactly the way I had in CD Spin Dr 5.0.3.640t as far as recording preferences, but each attempt to capture fails.

I purchased Toast 10 in hopes of finally getting a working version of CD Spin Dr. While Spin Dr. 5 was able to capture audio from my AudioTechnica USB turntable, it was unable to display an actual waveform after capture, rendering manual defining or Auto Defining of tracks impossible. I'd written this off to my recent switch from the PPC to Intel platform with my new Mac, as the program worked fine on the old PPC Mac. I had hoped the new Spin Dr. 6 would fix this bug.

My current workaround has been to use Spin Dr. 5 to capture audio, Save it out and re-open it in Spin Dr. 6, which at least displays a working waveform, allowing me to finish processing the tracks. However, I feel Roxio should be informed of this problem, and that such a kloodge does not reflect well on the software.

Thanks in advance for any helpful advice!

OK, I got a Roxio Tech email-support ticket instructing me to clear all my Roxio -related .PLIST files. Everything seems to be working fine. Recording from the USB turntable in CD Spin Dr. 6 as I write. Thanks to everyone!

I had to re-register Toast 10, launch and then close Toast in order to get CD Spin Dr. to open, but all's good now.

Well, I did as you and deleted all my .plist files and tried again and still have the following problems:

1. If I click on record instantly, I get nothing. before I had deleted the .plist file, I would get another window with the same three options. Repeated attempts just opened more windows.

2. If i selected advanced, I would not get the meters to recognize the audio that was playing. (an itunes song from my itunes library).

3. If I clicked on start a new recording and went thru the steps, I was able to record audio, select and create tracks and save the file. However, if i tried to reopen that file, CDSD did not allow it to open. Before I had deleted the .plist files, when I did a save as, CDSD would first delete the tracks I created, mute the sound, then save the file. When I would try to reopen that file, it would open it, but there would be no tracks there.

I don't know if this has anything to do with what CDSD is doing, but here is a list of the files that are in my library/QT folder:

AC3 Codec.component

AlchemyTV.component

AppleIntermediateCodec.component

AppleMPEG2Codec.component

CanonMJPEGAVI.component

CanonMJPEGAVIDec.component

CanonText.component

DesktopVideoOut.component

DivX 6 Decoder.component

DivX Decoder.component

DivX Encoder.component

DVCPROHDCodec.component

DVCPROHDMuxer.component

DVCPROHDVideoDigitizer.component

DVCPROHDVideoOutput.component

DVCPROHDVideoOutputClock.component

DVCPROHDVideoOutputCodec.component

FCP Uncompressed 422.component

Flip4Mac WMV Advanced.component

Flip4Mac WMV Export.component

Flip4Mac WMV Import.component

LiveType.component

TSCC.component

Could any of these be causing a problem, or is something not there that needs to be.

As it stands, I can't use CDSD for anything.

Please help.

Thanks,

Bob

I'm on a road trip so have nothing better to do than experiment with Spin Doctor on my MacBook Pro (previous series).

I haven't trashed any plists and am doing my tests while playing eMusic downloads in iTunes.

The Start Audio Capture Button just beeps when I click on it. Nothing else.

I then chose Start a New Recording and clicked Advanced to enter the single window that has all the settings. I selected the CD Spin Doctor Capture Support and recorded for awhile. When I stopped and clicked continue I got the waveform. I marked and named some tracks and chose Save. The file saved but the tracks were deleted. The window now showed the saved file name. I marked and named the tracks again and chose Save. This time it worked. I was able to quit and reopen the recording with the listed tracks when choosing Open Recent Recording in Spin Doctor.

Next I tried it with the wizard. This time I tried saving the recording before marking any tracks. The file saved but the window still called it Untitled. I added the tracks and saved and the window continued to say Untitled. These saved AIFF files could not be reopened with Spin Doctor or with QuickTime.

I tried yet another with the wizard and again marked tracks before choosing Save. This repeated the first test where the file saved but the tracks disappeared. The window showed the saved file name. I marked and named some tracks and chose Save. The file with the marked tracks can be opened in Spin Doctor.

From this test I'm concluding that the workflow requires creating a track before choosing Save. After the file is saved you can be serious about where you place and name your tracks because it works once the file is saved with the file name appearing in the Spin Doctor window.

I also tested with "Save as..." and "Save a Copy As..." The former worked the same as above. The latter caused Spin Doctor to crash when it tried to create the waveform. I tried with a couple different files and I strongly advise that nobody use "Save a Copy As..." because the resulting file is corrupted.

This application has many things not working. However, on my system it does work as long as I am careful not to step on the bugs.

I haven't tried the automatic song title recognition.

Interesting. I tested once using the wizard and got the error. I disconnected everything and then thought to try using the Advanced mode and it worked. I wonder if the reason it worked the second time is that I disconnected and reconnected the device rather than choosing the different window. I won't be able to check it again until tomorrow.

There appears to be many problems with the latest version of CDSD. I have posted problems with using it and it appears that for me the use of CDSD gets mixed reviews at best. This applies to both using the advanced tab and going thru the assistant.

My problems are identified in posts relating to recordings stopping (the timer stops) at intermittent times even though the green recording is still blinking and the meters still indicating sound. When done, the actual amount recorded is what the timer showed.

Also trying the third option for recordings did nothing.

The source of my audio is either utube videos or itunes songs that are in my itunes library.

I would say that if I use the assistant it works successfully about 60% of the time. If i use the advanced tab, it works about 30% of the time.

Also noted is that when I do get a successful recording and so a save as and select aac, I get poor results. This happens almost always when I use the advanced tab, when I use the assistant the results are a small bit better. Again, when I reopen that file I saved, many times it would open and have the audio on the waveform, but will ignore the tracks that I setup. I did find out that if you record audio, you MUST SET AT LEAST ONE track BEFORE you SAVE. If you do not, then CDSD saves the file, but w/o audio on the wave form.

I would caution anyone using CDSD that it has serious intermittent flaws, is not ready for prime time and not to be used if you are doing production work and are relying on CDSD to be dependable.

Hopefully, There will be enough posts that a fix will be posted.

Hi John

We're looking into the issue with regards to capturing from USB devices, I'll reply when I have more information or if I need more details from you.

thanks

Hi tsantee. I'm glad to hear from you; you're always helpful! Sorry I took so long to check back; I should've "tracked" this topic.

Yes, it seems to see the input properly. Here's some images from the "Wizard". First, you can see that Spin Dr. sees the source. The bars are definitely reacting to the music. Second, you can see that the levels are set, after setting Auto Level, all looks good to go. Third, after pressing the Record button, the cryptic error message; that only occurs in CDSD 6.01. If I use CDSD 5, I get a recording, no problem.

I just checked with my USB iMic and received that same error at the start of recording when using the guided steps. However, if I chose Advanced and recorded from the advanced window the recording was fine. So the bug is connected to the using the Recording Assistant with a USB audio input device.

I can't comment on the components you've listed, other than to say that a QuickTime DVCPROHDCodec component shows up in the Console app whenever iTunes is loaded, looking for something missing. This is with the new QT 7.6 update.

I would advise against removing any of these components, as they are system level parts of QuickTime, lest you hose your system.

Good luck.

Thx, tsantee. Short version: same problem using Advanced.

I actually got my first errors using the Advanced button (I pretty much knew the set-up drill from earlier ver.s of CDSD). I thought I'd walk it through the "Wizard" style setup so I could get screen caps for you. I've also checked my Prefs; nothing out of order there.

Thx again for trying to troubleshoot with me.

Unfortunately I don't have a USB turntable to compare but I do have a USB iMic I can test. What exactly happens when you try to record from the turntable? Do you see the turntable as an input option?

The waveform problem with Spin Doctor 5.x appeared with the OS 10.5.6 update. It worked prior to 10.5.6. Hopefully Roxio plans to release an update to that version to fix the waveform issue, but I don't know if that is in the works. That version also has a clicking problem when recording streaming audio.
