OK - what happens if you select safe mode, command prompt? What is the last thing to come up on the screen?

Reason for asking is that I've just had two machines do exactly that - but a file has been missing from Windows (and only one of them had any Roxio s/w on it) but they failed at exactly the same point

OK - in stages.

Turn on the computer and try to force it into the boot options screen

In there choose Safe Mode Command Prompt - all I need to know is at what point it stops loading files (you won't be using the mouse or anything else)

i turn it on.

goes to the window xp screen (black)

then goes to the next screen and stays frozen. can not do anything at all. just looks at me and stay in blue with "windows is starting" under the logo. it is like dead. i have tried to get into something and can not go to first base. i really think it has to go to the shop for repair.

If you can't even force it into safe mode command prompt, then there is a severe problem with the OS - you may just have to format C:\ and re-install XP

that is my next step. i can not get to the prompt to install it. i have to hope when i put it in the drive it will take. if not i am dead. thanks. either the drive or best buy. i think roxio corrupted the computer.

I would doubt it - as I said, I've just been working on two separate machines - both the same (freezing on boot) and one had Roxio and the other didn't (same fault on both btw - missing file in Windows\System which only showed when Safe Mode Command Prompt was selected at boot)
