Creating Chapter Menu In Mydvd

VCH

Question

I am very new to this and just tried to create a DVD from MPEG-2. I added the movie, selected the main menu style, customised it, edited the chapters using "Edit chapters" function. I manually added some 10 or so chapters. According to help, there should be a "Generate chapter menu(s) and link to selected button" checkbox, for editing the chapter menu. It seems to be missing in my "Edit Chapters" dialog. My project type is "DVD-Video", 16:9, PAL, MPEG-2, 720x576, 8.04Mbps. I used the Adventure menu style, changed the background image, title of the button for my movie, its position and size, that is pretty much it.

Where have I gone wrong?

Are you using MyDVD? There should be a check mark at the bottom of the Edit Chapters dialog box.

This is exactly what I would hope for. My screen looks the same as yours but does not have this checkbox.

My version is legal, by the way, purchased just before Christmas.

Where did you buy your version? Can you go to the Help/About and tell us the version and build information?

<My setup>

Roxio Creator 2009 V1.1.110 SP4;4.50.05a

MyDVD : Build 111B10E ENU

JVC Camcorder: GZ-MG36EK

<Topic> In "Edit Chapters" cannot find checkbox named

"Generate Chapter Menu(s) and link to Selected Button".

(I will refer to this as the GCM checkbox)

This DOES exist in Roxio Creator 2009 / MyDVD but it can be elusive to find.

<Briefly>

If your Preview panel is showing the MOVIE then the GCM Checkbox does NOT

Appear on the Edit Chapters panel. If the Preview panel is showing the MENU

Then Edit Chapters DOES have the GCM checkbox. Sneaky huh.

<Details>

Here is how to use it:

1. "Change Menu Style"

Best to choose a menu style that includes a text caption for each chapter

rather than ones that only show the first frame of the chapter.

For example the "Around the World" menu style.

Do this from Edit (middle left of screen) --> Change Menu Style.

2. "Add New Movie"

Use Menu Tasks (top left of the screen) --> Add New Movie to find and add

your movie (or movies) as created by Roxio Videowave.

This movie will now appear in the Project View panel (bottom left of the screen),

it has an icon of a blue square within a white square.

3. "Preview Panel"

(THIS IS THE TRICK)

To get the GCM checkbox when you will select Edit Chapters you MUST have the Preview panel

(right hand side of the screen) showing the image of the MENU.

If you have it showing a preview of the MOVIE then you will get the Edit Chapters panel

but WITHOUT the GCM check box.

4. "Project View"

With the Preview Panel showing the image of the Menu go to Project View (bottom left of panel),

highlight your movie (with blue in white square icon) and RIGHT-click it. Select Edit Chapters.

The Edit Chapters panel appears and Hey Presto - the GCM checkbox is there.

Now you can scan through the movie to where you want each chapter to start and press the

"Add Chapter Here" button. When you are done press OK.

In your Project View (bottom left of screen) you will see entries for "Chapter Menu"

(icon of grey rectangles and small blue boxes)

and entries marked "1", "2" to "4"(blue in white box icon).

If you have many chapters you may also get a "Next" and further "Chapter Menu" and entries "5" etc.

6. Extra Tip.

If you right-click a chapter entry e.g. "1" it will give you the Edit Chapters panel with an "Update Chapter Menu(s)" checkbox.

7. Using your own titles

In "Project View" (bottom right of screen) successively

highlight each entry, right-click and press Rename.

Change the Movie, menu headings and chapter titles to something meaningful.

For example change "My Movie 001" to "Europe Vacation";

change chapter heading "1" to "London"; "2" to "Paris" etc.

8. Previewing your menus

On the Preview Panel (right hand side of screen) top line use the Preview button with a blue TV screen icon

left of the Burn button.

This lets you see how the menus will look and work.

9. Finishing

When you're done you can save the project using File --> Save Project

and then burn your DVD using the Burn button on the Preview panel.

Hope this helps

OP dropped out of sight 6 months ago. Might be better if you post tips to active Topics.

You are correct, in MyDVD you must have Menus selected for the Generate Chapter checkbox to show.

It halfway makes sense… A Movie can be used for more than one Menu button. You may not want the same Chapter markers to apply to other buttons.

Not that difficult to find at all. There is only one place I know of where it doesn't show and there is a reason.

From the MAIN Menu preview, RIGHT mouse button click on the Video's button and choose 'Edit Chapters'. You will see this check mark.

From the Main Menu preview, you will see the 'tree' to the left. Right Click on the Video button name there and you will see the 'Edit Chapters' check mark.

YOU WILL NOT SEE this check mark if you click on the MOVIES TAB in the left pane and right click on the video name and choose 'Edit Chapters' there.

I'm sure this is by design although we don't know the reason.

I could have been more specific, I guess.

This is exactly what I purchased and where: http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=57TL

MyDVD Version information from the Help/About dialog box: Roxio Creator 2009 (Build 111B10E ENU)

Running WinXP 5.1 (Build 2600) SP3 on Intel Core2 6600 (2.4GHz), about 3GB of available memory and 140GB of free disc space.

To make sure this is not because of my customisations, I started MyDVD afresh, created a default DVD-Video project (the one which comes with "Around the world" menu style), added a single MPEG and tried to edit chapters. There was no check box there either, despite what the application help says.

You know I think I bumped into that guy one night in an alley in Seoul… Haven't touched a drop since!

The question about your software source was to confirm we were dealing with Retail and not some hobbled OEM version.

You didn't say if you had C2009 SP2 and left out info about your VideoCard.

If you start a new MyDVD Project and load one of the sample Windows files (wmv) that came on the PC any change?
