Sound Problems With Using Lps/tape Assistant

nillabeam

Question

1st few times trying th LP's and Tape assistant. When I run this program it some how takes over the sound of the computer. I am not able to hear the tape playing when recording the tape to the PC or its play back. I also am no longer able to hear sound at all from any other application. I ran this program yesterday with the same result, However I seem to have somehow opened enough prgrams like media play and websites with video and sound on them that sound on the PC started working again. Once I got sound back on the PC I was then able to hear the recorded track from the Tape assistant. I tried to convert another tape today however I am not able to get sound back at all. If any one has any sugestion as to why I am getting this problem please let me known.

I am using the ION Tape 2 PC tape deck player that has a USB connection on it. I have it plugged into the pc and I have Microphone (2 usb and codec) selected for the conversion.the other 2 options are Microphone (realtek High Def audio) and Realtek digital imput (high def audio) - although i dont have any digital imput. For the input i have Master Volume select and it is the only choice I have there.

Thanks everyone

Thanks for all your help.. I havent been around in a few days to check the posting or try the new suggestions but will give it a shot over the weekend.

I do have one final question as far as the sound goes. Do anyone have a good website or tips and tricks for adjusting the equalizer in this program. Or perhaps anything for the Sound Editor. Now I understand the converting an old tape will never be the quailty of a CD but I would like to improve it as much as possible.

Thanks again everyone

Old audio cassette tapes should be as good as CD (almost). All bets are off if the original tape was cheap and it has stretched. Ive just done about 15 or so recently (while answering questions on this forum). I'm doing that now. Are you getting noise/hum/other bad things? What?

Sometimes properly grounding equipment can get rid of some noise. Does that ION device have any grounding wires? If so where do you have that connected?

You can download the free trial version of Gold Wave if there are significant issues with sound. It can help clean. Did you get Sound Soap when you purchased your version of EMC 10. That works well also to remove hum and to improve the sound quality.

I looked at that device and it only captures as mp3. Is that correct? As you know mp3 files uses a codec that is a compressed and lossy audio format. If you then want to put the files on a CD, they must then be reconverted to a wav file. You never get that lost audio back though.

Well here is the deal. I did not use the software that came with the ION mainly cause it was crap. So I am using EMC 10 directly. I use the usb connection to the pc and load up the LP/tape converter. I selected MP3 mainly because I might want to put on a mp3 play or ipod or something in the future. Other than that no real reason for choosing mp3 of wav. I guess I could take them in on EMC as WAV and when or if i want to move them to another device have EMC convert them at the time.

The reason I asked for help is because when going through the options like the cleaner and enhancer I didnt really notice that much of difference until I started playing around with the Equalizer. Since I am a beginer I dont really know what I am adjusting. I really am just guesing to what i think sounds ok.

If you checked out the ION then you can see its preety basic unit. There is no seperate ground. For now its ok cause the tape I was converting was Professioal store bought tapes. I have not yet tried to convert my personal tapes like the blanks used to recorde the radio back when you could still do that. (it would be nice to do that again)

I am open for any and all suggestions

Just to be clear there is no way for this system to play the sound while recording. The only option is to purchase a seprerate sound card for this purpose.

Well it sounds (no pun intended) that you have tried everything else and nothing else seems to be working. Someone else may have some ideas. I remember an old,old post that suggested a jumper between jacks on the audio device but I think that was before the new forums where all that old knowledge was lost.

I don't have Vista anymore so I can't suggest other things to try.

Of course no one is looking over your shoulder and no one has exactly the same computer hardware/software so "no way" may be extreme.

The decision is yours.

The only other thing I can think of is that the choice you need is disabled in Vista.

Go to the Control Panel,Sound.

Go to the Playback tab.

Right click any device that shows.

Check "show disabled devices".

Now see if any new devices show in the list.

If so,right click and check Enable.

Now see if you can make it work.

If you do enable any new devices make sure they're not muted in the mixer.

That USB device may be changing the settings on your computer's audio set up. I had a USB device with a camcorder that did that so often that I put a reminder to turn on the appropriate audio record/listen setting. What does your Ion manual say about settings?

Are you using XP or Vista?

You are correct I kept messing with it after I put the posting up. I found that the main sound in Vista was being changed. I set the default to the sound card for play back and the default for recording to the usb. So for now at least the play back sound is solved. However my only problem is still getting the sound to play whilie I am recording the tape. I looked in the options and the mute while recording is not checked. Any suggestions?

As to your original question, if you have adjusted all your audio settings and you still can't hear the music you are recording, I have run out of ideas.

Note: I don't understand why Ion needs my name and e-mail address in order to read their manuals. I was hoping to see something in there that would address the issue. I remember that some people with ION turntables also had a problem. I don't remember what it was and if it was ever resolved. Search this site for ION

Edit: Sorry, I forgot that the search engine on this site will not serch for 3 letter words. I checked for turntable the read some posts about USB connected devices. A couple of people could not hear music while recording using a similar device.

Call or e-mail ION. BTW, do you hear audio if you use their software? You can use that to capture the audio and still use Sound Editor to edit it.

Buy a stand-alone audio card if you don't have a laptop. Some audio chips do not have the ability to play what is being captured. Even a inexpensive one will give you better audio and more options. Creative audio cards has an option to record and listen with :What U Hear" option. Here are some options.

Check the my signature and some of the others to see what they use. Do not get M-Audio even though they are very good; they don't work with this program.
