Cannot Install

mossie

Question

OK. First of all I have tried all the sticky posts suggestions regarding clean install (after which I had to do a system restore because NO program worked), renaming dsetup.dll (which isn't on my pc) and anything else I can find but to no avail. Sometimes install goes as far as getting the "installation was interrupted" message, sometime it hangs at various places in the install - right now it's stuck at installing smart sond. Is there any guaranteed way to actually get this to work? Do Roxio even care that there is a problem? I have been using PCs for 15 years and have never had a problem with any program like with this. It's crazy that Roxio can develop what (I hear) is an excellent program, but cannot develop an install routine that actually works. I know there can be problems with different computers but just skimming this forum it's not just a few. I don't see why I should need to spend hours reading forum posts or phoning support just to get a program to install.

My system:

Intel Quad Core 6600

4 GB RAM

2 x 500 GB hard drives

2 x DVD burners, 1 LG, 1 NEC

Nvidia 8800GTX 512 MB graphics.

Asus sound cars

Vista Ult 64.

Any help welcome, and please no "read the stickies" messages, been there, done that.

Thanks.

Mossie

You posted an install problem back in June, here, what has changed in the succeeding 7 months?

Nothing much has changed. I formatted my system because it was the only way I could get Roxio to install. Now I need to reinstall and I am not going through the format process again. Also should have posted in Creator 2009 forum as that's what I have now.

I updated to 2009 from EMC10, so not reinstalling, upgrading I guess.

I have done a clean install at least 5 times over the last 2 days. At first I got a message that the installation was interrupted, however it now appears to complete but there are no shortcuts in the start menu or on the desktop,no folders in c:\Program Files, no registry entries and no error messages. In between these attempts there were 2 installs where I got the following steps shown my the installer:

Enter Serial

Choose location

Ready to install - always shows Typical Install, no option to choose which components to install.

Installing Smart Sound

Sometimes followed by installing CinePlayer, CinePlayer decoder pack, Roxio validation, sometimes just Smartsound

Installing SmartSound (again)

Completed Successfully

Sometimes I get Cineplayer and smartsound installed sometimes despite the Installation completed successfully message nothing is actually installed. Also if I cancel the install I don't get a "rolling back" message, I get an "Installation completed successfully". That is pretty much what happens.

I have tried the Clean Install at least 5 times as I said but most times there are no folders or registry entries to delete. The dsetup.dll file has never been on my system so can't delete that. Apart from that I followed the instructions letter for letter.

I have now tried a clean install at least 10 times in 3 days and still no change. The latest attempt installed .Net3.5 and smart sound but did not even try to install anything else. I think the only way to get this working is a format and it's not worth that, especially if the program is anything like as buggy as the installer.

Hi I purchased Creator before Christmas. Tried to install it at least 6 times. I have been waiting for WEEKs for a roxio reply to my "ticket". I reall don't think these people care about customer service.

It is frustrating to say the least. I preferred Roxio in it's earlier versions to Nero, but at least Nero can be installed without going through this sort of process.

Why don't you just pick up your phone and call Roxio?

I cannot believe one would waste their time on the web when one phone call is all it will take.

I'm in Ireland - there is no local support number. I have already spent enough money on this bug ridden software without spending as much again on talking to someone in support who will basically tell me what I can read here, and probably tell me there is no problem with their installer when there clearly is. My experience of support desks (not Roxio) is that they are rarely able to provide help that users can't do better.

cd: Looks like he did a Format then tried to install 2009.

mossie: I don't think you should need to format to install. But keep in mind that the error messages are specific and we need to know what they say as that is the clue to what action is needed to correct things.

Suggest that you do the Clean Install and note carefully when/where/what breaks.

Are you keeping V10? Or did you clean uninstall V10 before attempting install of C2009?

cd

Sorry, I should have included this. It's the download version. I have extracted the files from the .exe to my hard drive but get the same problem that way. I have done the msconfig disabling routine but no difference. I started a ticket with Roxio support and they suggested following the clean install until everything is removed, the creating a new user account and installing from ther but no difference.

As for a drive error, possible but everything else works just fine. I'm going to try installing on my laptop to see how that goes.

UPDATE: I have successfully installed on my laptop but still no success on the desktop. Goes as far as installing smartsound and freeze

:) Update again. Installed at last, attempt number 15 or 16. Compared to my laptop there are 2 icons missing from the list of programs - BackOnTrack and CinePlayer. Maybe not comaptible with Vista 64?? Anyway I can live without those. Also no creator 2009 shortcut on desktop or Start Menu, just the applications. Also just checking the installation folders ther are a lot of files missing - the Central 4 folder only has a plugins folder no files???

Thanks

Just to further update this. As I previously said the Creator suite partiall installed. However on trying to run some of the applications I got a message saying the apps were not properly installed, restart and try againg. I then had to try a reinstall with the same result. Incidentally, even after doing a clean uninstall, the Roxio installer starts by uninstalling the apps, even though I have followed the instructions to the letter.

I cannot understand how Roxio can release a product that cannot even be installed except by jumping through the hoops of a clean install, and in my case not even then. The least they could do is provide some sort of app that completely removes it's software prior to reinstalling. I like the Creator suite from past experience, but this is not an isolated incident and Roxio do not seem to even be trying to resolve this issue. I have never had such a bad experience with a product or "support" before. Thanks to all in the forum for trying but after 20+ install attempts I'm at my limit. This is my last time buying Roxio.

Well I didn't see this in your posts, but are you installing from cd or download?

If you are installing off of a cd, I suggest you save the files to your hard drive, then try an install. Even trying a different dvd rom since you have 2.

You can also try to disable everything in msconfig. Restart, then install. After, go back into msconfig, and enable all the programs you prefer, and update roxio software.

It honestly sounds like a disk error. Since the install is skipping around in sequence, it sounds as if there is an error coming from the drive, scratched cd, or anti-virus/anti-spyware programs of some type are preventing registry edits.
