"New Gateway" doesn't tell us anything about your computer. Please post your specifications like CPU speed, what kind of video chips on your motherboard, and any other things that you might think of. If you have two different USB ports, did you try the other? Unplug anything else on the USB ports and try that. Make sure that you have the latest updates for the drivers on your computer. Yes it is new to you but some parts may have been sitting on Gateway's shelves for months.

EMC 8 Suite on new Gateway Convertable Laptop. Just purchased EMC 8 with Dazzle. Media Import works ago for the audio pull down, shows Dazzle as the input option. But, when I select either the Photo or Video tab the application closes.

You are at the extreme low end for capturing. That could be most of your problem.

Thanks, but that still does not explain for me why the application just closes when the Photo and Video tab is selected. Guess I'm just not tech savy enough to understand.

Nor am I. Shut down anything that you have running in the background, get rid of any spyware/malware you have on your computer, update your video drivers to the latest version available, and defrag your hard drive.

There are many things that can cause problems, and it is frustrating as hell to try to find a solution to problems. I hope you can find yours, because, even though you are at the low end, you should be able to capture.

Here is what worked for me.

Start with the device unplugged and the video camera turned off but plugged into the device (i used S-video). If you try to start Media Import with the device plugged into the USB port, it does hang.

1) Open Media Import THEN plug in the device

2) Select the device and the capture option you want to use (I did use AVI at 320 by 240)

3) When everything settles down, turn on the camera.( the third time I tried t, I had to turn on the camera to get the proper display)

4)Press the capture button

5) Start the video playback.

It worked and the preview of what I captured seemed to be of good quality. My camera is a Sony Handycam video Hi8. TRV 68 (a bit old but serviceable)

Depending on your camera (device) you may have to play around with the procedure.

Thanks, but that still does not explain for me why the application just closes when the Photo and Video tab is selected. Guess I'm just not tech savy enough to understand.

Thank you, I have the same Video camera also, 14+ years old as I recall, but still works great. Re-installed EMC 8 my Dell Dimension 8300, Media Import works fine. Chipset on the Dell is a GeForce FX5200 (128mb), the Gateway is an Intel (96mb). Could this be the issue? Want to run this on my laptop, if it doesn't work, I'm returning the product.

I have experienced the same problem with media import closing after the video or photo tab is selected on 2 different computers - a Dell Dimension 4500 with a geforce 420 card and an acer tablet pc with the intel on board video. Both have 1 gb of ram. The Dell is a P4 at 2.5 ghz and the Acer is a 1.7 mobile pentium.

Acknowledging that previously installed software might be a problem, I rebuilt the tablet from the ground up. Well, after a fresh start, I didn't even do the windows updates, the same problem occured. Audio import works, but photo and video cause the program to close prematurally. At the time of roxio emc 8 install there was no anti virus or anti spyware software running. Window Movie Maker initializes and I can copy digital photos from an attached camera. Problem occurred both before and after the 8.05 path was applied.

This problem does not appear to be related to the camera, but rather to the vido or photo import program starting and not shutting down before any attempt at capturing media is attempted, Since it occurred for me on two different computers and on one of them after a operating system rebuild it seems to be a roxio issue not a computer or conflict issue.

For me the advantage or roxio has been one package to cover most functions. I don;t want to have to go out to windows movie maker to capture my movies as AVI files to then use them in VW and mydvd to make a dvd which is basically a mpeg file - its a lot of extra encoding. I hope roxio/sonic can fix this problem. Given that it occurs on a freshly rebuilt computer its hard to blame it on some one elses software or registry entries.

You are much better off starting a new post. Your problem/solution is different.

I did a quick check on that 420 and now question of it is fully DirectX 9© compatible. You must have 9© to run this program. This is in the minimum requirements for this program.

From NVidia web site, I found this

• API support

° Complete DirectX® support, including DirectX 8.1

° Full OpenGL® 1.3 support

You will need to contact NVidia to see if it is compatible with DirectX 9©

Since you didn't post the Acer information, you should look to see if it is compatible, that you have it installed and that you have the latest drivers for the video chip.

The 420 is fully compatable. Roxio 7.5 worked fine. The problem is that the program module doesn't even load. We never get to the capture point, because as the program is loading, it appears for a second and then disappears and returns to roxio home. I did a little more digging in the event log, and found that albumcore is returning an unspecified error

The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( AlbumCore ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: Service stopped.

Also if I use the photo import tab i sometimes get a system error. Interestingly if I don't respond to the error message- just move it to a corner of the screen-the photo and video import work. The error message does not always appear . If I respond to debug the error, The program disappears, and Dr Watson reorts the following

The application, C:\Program Files\Roxio\Easy Media Creator 8\Media Import\MediaCapture8.exe, generated an application error The error occurred on 05/10/2006 @ 16:41:19.375 The exception generated was c0000005 at address 0419B497 (Roxio_VWGuiBase8!GetEffectThumbnailFromLib)

I want to be clear this is not a rendering problem, it is a failure to load the interface module that controls the rendering. The fact that it works while in the error state really makes ,e think this is some type of coding or timing issue.

The Acer has an Intel Extreme Graphics Controller 82852/82855 GM/GME Controller Screen is a 1024 x 768. The Dell has more software loaded on it so I figured that rebuilding the laptop from scratch would give a relatively clean playing field from the software standpoint. Also EMC 7.5 worked fine on the acer.

Yes before anyone asks I tried to uninstall 8.0 and reinstall 7.5- cd/dvd drive disappears. When 7.5 is ununstalled, cd is still missing and banged out in the device manager. I have to remove the upper and lower filters in the registry and live without d2d - something deeper than just the filters, but at leasr the derive works.

Hope this helps make the mud clearer.

I'd like to add some information from my setups to yours. I'm running two computers (Gateway desktop and Toshiba notebook, both P4s, XP Pro, lots of drive space and memory). The Gateway is my work computer and I have a Studio 8 installed there. When I use the Dazzle on that computer it does capture video and audio using Studio and MovieMaker.

When I use the Toshiba(with MediaImport or MovieMaker), if I access the Video page and select the Dazzle the Green LED on the top of the unit goes off and never comes back on. Then if I try to do anything else with MediaImport it generally will lock up and not do anything unless I remove the Dazzle device (note: trying to stop the USB device isn't successful so it is removed without "stopping" it). After it is removed the program seems to return to my control and generally lets me shut it down but I have to go in through the task manager to completely shut it down. I tried to access the audio today (using media import) and it does appear to work but when you check the audio levels there is nothing recording. I also noted that on the desktop, there was an input selection of "microphone" for the Dazzle that doesn't show up on the notebook.

I've tried disabling everything in the startup "run" menu via msconfig, checked my directX 9c (works great), disabled zone alarm and virus scan yet nothing seems to help. I should also note that when I use my older ADSTech USB data capture device on the same port it works (they are not ever connected at the same time). I know that the Dazzle hardware works because of my tests with the desktop.

I hope that this helps in some way.

On another post someone seems to have found the conflict. in the Windows Language bar there is an option to extend language functions to non supported applications. When this option is turned off. the video and photo import functions start UP appropriately and allow capture

To access this go to the control Panel switch to Classic View, Choose Language and Regional settings, Choose the Languages tab, Click the details button and then uncheck both boxes on the next screen to prevent extending language services.
