Can't Read My Toast Burned Dvd's On Another Computer.

KariD

Question

I bought toast for my new Mac Pro last November. I am a photographer and I always make a DVD backup of all my weddings images. I have been using toast. I burn the DVD's and verify it. I have put them back in to check and make sure everything looks ok.

Fast forward to this past week....

I did a newborn session for a friend who is a photographer. I burned her files for her on a DVD and mailed it to her. She called me and told me she couldn't open the files. (I thought she had the problem.) I was working on my mac laptop away from my desktop, and went to put in a burned DVD to get some files. There was NOTHING on the DVD. I checked a couple more of my back up DVD's... nothing. I put them in my friends PC desktop, and I could see a file, but couldn't do anyting or open it at all.

So, I got home to my Mac Pro that I originally burned them on, and I could read all the DVD's fine.

So, it appears that I can read them on the computer I burned them on, but none other. I searched the Roxio help pages, and coudln't find any info. I sent a support ticket, and this is what they said:

"You will need to confirm that you have burned the disc in a CLOSED or FINALIZED mode in order for it to read in any other computer.

Please Open Toast and click on Recorder(in the menubar)> Recorder Settings> Advanced> then next to Data CD: Please choose 'Write Disc' - now close the settings window and reattempt please.

If the information provided does not resolve your issue simply update your webticket with a detailed explanation with the steps you have tried and any error messages you receive. "

I checked that, and it was already checked. But, just to be sure, I tested it again, and I still have problems. I put in another support ticket last Thursday, and I still haven't heard back from them. Does anyone here know what is the problem? Can anyone help me?

The issue of closing a disc only applies to CD media and not DVD media. So that doesn't explain it in any case.

What setting did you use in Toast to burn the DVD? Was it Mac & PC or was it DVD-Rom (UDF)? Whichever one you used try the other. Also, I suggest burning the disc at the slowest speed rather than Best. You can see what burn speeds are available in the Recorder Settings window after the blank disc is recognized. Lastly, be certain to use good-quality media. I recommend Verbatim discs as having the least compatibility issues.

If none of this makes any difference it could be an issue with the drive that burned the discs.

Thank you for your reply! I did use the Mac + PC setting, I'll try the other one. I'll also try burning a disc without toast to see if it is an issue with the drive.

I am using a very high quality DVD - Tanyo Yuden. So, I am sure that is not the problem.
