lynn98109
That model can have a CD burner, a DVD-ROM, a DVD burner, or a Combo drive (reads/writes CDs, reads DVDs). http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/syst...EN/SM/specs.htm Without the id string, it's impossible to say what kind of drive you have - but there is reason to suspect it may not be capable of burning DVDs. (to get the id string, right-click on MyComputer > properties > Hardware > Device Manager and click on the + by the DVD/CD-ROM drives. Copy it exactly, character for character, space for space, upper case and lower case exactly) If you don't have a DVD burner, no software program will add the additional hardware that is needed to burn a DVD. lynn98109
A bit of digging doesn't get the kind of info I want, but does indicate it is a custom drive used as OEM [Original Equipment Mfgr] - in other words, it comes with a computer, as opposed to being something you can buy as such - and also, it has been reported as having problems. Brendon or cdanteek may come along with more knowledge, but I would guess from the fact it has a plus [+] it may not like dash [-] media - in the early days of recordable DVDs, they were two competing formats and drives used one or the other. After a certain point, it became standardized that drives would handle both. So I would suggest two possibilities (and again, Brendon or cdanteek may have better info). One is to try it with plus media. The other is to get a newer drive, they are pretty cheap these days. Lynn
gi7omy
That should be able to handle both - and + RW http://forum.rpc1.org/viewtopic.php?f=12&a...p;sk=t&sd=a It could be bad media or a faulty drive tho

bk3405
I have tried DVD-R and DVD+RW Discs and the DVD writer will not recognize either. Yet when I burn a CD-R disc it works fine. You stated it could be a faulty drive. Could it be a setting, as I have burned DVD's in the past? Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks---Bill
gi7omy
If it worked before that's no indication of present performance (the DVD uses a different laser) It's like saying my car was fine yesterday - but won't start today. You may be better replacing the drive (they're not that expensive nowadays)
bk3405
Is it easy to replace a drive? What is involved? Before I replace it is there a test I can do to verify the DVD drive is defective? Thanks---Bill Also-- I forgot to ask if the drive could be external connected via usb. Is that possible--Thanks---Bill
gi7omy
Involvement - open case, 4 screws to release the drive - unhook the cables, slide drive out, slide new drive in, reconnect cables, replace screws Checking - DVD Info Pro might give an idea - but it's hard to say External - yes (they're available but a bit more expensive as they need a separate power source)
