Sony Blu-ray And Toast 10

After experimenting with a number of discs, thought I'd share my expereinces and see if any Sony blu-ray player owners are having different results. I've made blu-ray projects on both DVD-R and BD-R discs and get the same results with both. My problem is that the menus don't work. I am able to make an auto start disc and I am able to make them loop, but if I make them start from a menu, they won't work at all. When inserted, the menu start discs just show a black screen with a yellow box. Pushing "play" or "enter" won't start them playing. I put two short movies onto the same disc with auto start and I can get a limited amount of menu use. What happens is if I hit the "top Menu" button on the remote, the movie that is playing freezes and the yellow box overlays the image. I can press the "next" button on the remote and get the second yellow box to appear. Hitting "enter" will them start playing the second movie on the disc. On two occasions, I was actually able to get the menu background to appear and the images and info that accompanies each movie appeared as they were supposed to do. Unfortunately, I am unable to repeat this, even though I push the same sequence of buttons. Pushing the "next" or "previous" buttons moves forward or backward within either movie in evenly spaced increments.

 

I am completely unable to burn BD-RE discs of any brand and this is not a Sony related problem. I have been trying this on a Sony BDP-550 and a Sony BDV-IT1000ES (home theater with blu-ray system). If other Sony blu-ray owners are getting different results, I'd be interested in hearing from you.

If I let Toast do the encoding, the chapter stops wind up all over the place, not even close to where they are supposed to be. So far, I can only bypass the Toast encoder (it goes directly to muxing) when burning a 1080 60i file. I have not been able to burn a 720 60p file without Toast re-encoding it, no matter what I do. What file format are you working with?

Unless Toast recognizes the file as a Blu-Ray file, it will re-encode it. I don't believe you can make a Blu-Ray file in Compressor using the H.264 codec. You have to encode with MPEG-2 and select "Blu-Ray" in the "Stream Usage" box.

I just burned a 2:20 program with about 15 chapters (Verbatim Blu-Ray Media) and tested it in a Sony 350, and everything worked perfectly. The only exception is that some of the menu buttons have no thumbnail image, but that is consistent on the other players I have played it on as well. The video was encoded in FCP Compressor and muxed & burned in Toast 10.

How did you get Toast to mux a FCP Compressor file? I have tried a bunch of combinations and nothing worked, Toast always re-compressed. I called Roxio support and they told me there was no way to compress a file to H.264 in Compressor and give it to Toast without Toast re-compressing it.

 

Any help would be appreciated.

How do you go about upgrading the firmware?

Do you have to plug the 350 into a router, or can you plug it into a laptop?

The player has an ethernet jack on the back.

If you use a router to distribute your Internet connection,

plug a cable from that router into the RJ-45 (Enet) jack on the back of the player,

fire it up, and select the firmware upgrade function from the player's home screen.

RTFM to find the specific remote control commands, if you need 'em.

You shouldn't, though...it's pretty intuitive.

Did you have chapter markers in your project? If so, did they import in the proper place and with a thumbnail inside of each one? Is your success due to upgrading the firmware on your 350? How do you go about upgrading the firmware? Do you have to plug the 350 into a router, or can you plug it into a laptop? Sorry for all the questions, but I'm anxious to get mine working.

It is what late but The Blu Ray burned with Toast 10 do work now on a Sony 350

And I did not have selected play movie first.

In Compressor, choose the Mpeg2 preset. Select Blu-Ray. If your program is not terribly long, I would choose a bit-rate with a maximum of 25 and average of 20. Add Dolby audio at a bit-rate of 192.

After it is encoded, change the names of your video and audio files so that they are the same (with different suffixes). That way, when you drag your video file into the Toast window, the audio will follow. Choose Custom, and in the encoder pane, select Mpeg2, Dolby 192, Re-encode Never, Progressive and 16x9. When you submit, it should skip Encoding and go directly to Muxing. This works for me with 1080i , but with 720p it wants to re-encode. Compressor does not do MPeg4 for Blu-Ray.

I tried to make the settings the same in Compressor and Toast to see how it would work. I don't know if the video encoded again or not because I left the room. It was encoding the chapter markers when I left. My results are that I was able to get a preset background to appear upon disc insertion. There was a large square in the center of the screen with a thumbnail from about five seconds into the video. Although I put seven chapter markers into the video, what appeared was one smaller box in the upper left corner of the screen. The center was transparent. The buttons on the remote did take me exactly to the chapter points, but the menu wasn't very useful.

 

Dr. Video, if you could give me detailed breakdown of the settings you used, I would appreciate it. I don't have any idea how to set the average or maximum bit rate, or audio settings. I used mpeg-2, but could I use mpeg-4?

I added the markers in FCP, and brought it in as a single movie. No auto start. I think the secret is not having Toast do the encoding.

Thanks for the link to the Toast 9 forum. Several there seemed to think it was a Sony problem and not a Roxio problem. However, the Sony players will play pre-recorded disc menus, so it seems to me that the fix needs to come from Roxio.

I have the same issue here in Japan. I had the same issue with Toast 9 and oped Toast 10 will solve but the situation is nealy the same. The top menu is just showing the flame of the each movies in yellow color. It seems to me there is a bug in color space in menu. By the way the Bluray player is BDZ-L55 ,regular stand alone type sold in Japan. As far as I tested those menus are fine on PS3. So there is some difference between PS3 and Bluray Player. But Roxio should work togeher with Sony and find work around.

I assume same problem exists in Toast 10. In my case, I have a Sony S-301 player and menus seem to display OK for my burned BD-R and BD-RE disks using Toast 9. Hopefully problem will be fixed soon for newer Sony models.
