When I attempt to add a video in MyDVD, I get an error message stating that the video cannot be edited and it is not added. What does this Mean? The videos in question were captured from a Canon video camera. What am I doing wrong?

The extension is .mpg

I used MyDVD to capture it download from the video camera and that was the extension placed on the file.

What exact Roxio program do you have installed on your pc, and did you purchase it separately or did it come pre-installed?

How did the files go from your camcorder to your pc? I'm assuming not the MyDVD program, which is a DVD authoring program.

Has this happened with multiple files or just one?

It was pre-installed. It is Roxia Creator

Yes, it is via the MyDVD rpogram.

All of my files, from the camcorder.

Which version ? Roxio Creator 2009, EMC 10, EMC 9....? Please be specific since there really is no such program as "Roxio Creator"

What kind of camcorder: miniDV (tape), DVD, hard drive, memory card? How is the camcorder (make/model?) connected to your PC?

You are not supplying much information to work with

Canon Vixia HV30 MiniDV. Connected via IEEE 1394 4-pin to 4-pin cable.

If I knew what information to supply, I would most likely know the answer. Thank you very much for your tolerance.

It's possible that the Dell OEM version has the avi codecs crippled - that has happened before (along with AC3 audio)

What was done was to not only remove them from the program, but also block them if they were manually added

If you are connected via firewire, then you want to capture as a DV-AVI file, not .mpeg. DV-AVI, although larger file size, is as close to lossless as you can get. Mpeg is compressed.

Does the captured video play correctly in Windows Media Player? Have you tried capturing with the software that came with the camera?

I believe you have a Hidef camcorder and I don't know if your "DE" software is able to capture that video. You still have not told us really what version your have: 'DE" does not tell us very much except that it propably is some OEM version. Is it EMC 8, 9 or 10?

I have the same camera and the full program does capture the video correctly and I can edit them with no problems. I am also guessing that the DE program has been limited and is a major part of the issue

What computer do you have? CPU speed, memory, video card or chip? Laptop or desktop?

The HD from those cameras are high quality (bit rate) and therefore large files. The combination of the limited program and perhaps computer limitations are combining to cause the problem. Your computer must be fast enough to capture the video without errors (skipped frames and audio issues.

When you open MyDVD, go to the top menu and select tools, options and run the test. Is the dot near software after the test? For marginal computers, that is where it needs to be.

The Roxio programs are Roxio Creator and MyDVD 9.0 DE.

Dell Laptop. Inspiron 1520. I cannot get the particulars now, because my wife is working on that computer. (Actually doing accounting work on the lid of the laptop) :D

This problem occurs even with small files.

I'll try this, when my wife is off the computer (see above).

Yes, it plays fine. There is no video capture software with the camera.

The program does not allow user determination of file type.

Now that makes sense in a program that is suppose to edit video. :D

It's something you would really need to bring up with Dell - most of us here run the full version but Dell do modify theirs and there's no way for most here to know what was included (and more importantly, what was omitted)
