Section 0 Unreadable, Verification Failed

mvalentine

Question

Hi folks,

Trying to back up some dvds on popcorn 3.0.2 but right when the verification begins, I get an error message that reads something like, "sector 0 couldn't be read, verification failed." I didn't have any such problems in the past. What's going on? I tried using lens cleaner thinking the drive was dirty but it doesn't seem to solve the problem. Any ideas? I've checked other forums but no one seems to have an answer.

Specs:

Power Mac G4

Dual 1 ghz

OS 10.4.11

Appreciate the help,

mvalentine

tsantee,

Thanks for replying! I've posted this question on a number of forums and you're the ONLY person who has responded.

I'm using Matrix dvd-r dvds. I've burned many a dvd with this brand with no problem until just a week or so ago. The dvd plays erratically without verification. It jumps chapters, and sometimes goes back to the main menu. Very frustrating. I usually have the dvd writie at "1x dvd."

I'll try your suggestion and get back to you. In the meantime, if you have any other thoughts and suggestions, I'm all ears.

Thanks again, tsantee!

If you choose the speed after the disc is inserted and recognized I believe you'll find that 1X is not supported. If a speed shows in italics it is not supported by the disc and the drive's firmware. Most DVD media today won't burn that slow.

Insert one of your Matrix DVDs and choose Disc Info from the Recorder menu. There should be a link in the window that appears that goes to a Web site where users submit reports about different brands and codes of media. See if yours has good reports.

My understanding of the error you're getting is the drive is having difficulty reading the disc after it is burned. That seems consistent with the playback problem you're seeing with the disc.

I'll think about this some more.

tsantee,

Well, it looks like your suggestion worked! A few questions:

- What's the difference between dropping the TS folders and/or saving as a disc image? (By the way, I also turned off the verification in the preferences. Was that a good move?)

- Is the video quality different between the two processes?

Another thing – I checked the website. Wow, I didn't even know that existed. Apparently the reviews on Matrix are mixed. Either people hate them or love them. They worked fine for me up until a week or so when I started having that problem. Again, I'm not sure what happened or where the problem originated from. Again, any ideas?

As for the Matrix dvd-r's, I bought them in bulk so I'm stuck with 150 of them. Guess I'll have to make the best of it.

Thanks again, tsantee!

The disc image contains the UDF formatting so it is a straight bit-for-bit writing to the disc. With the VIDEO_TS setting Toast is needing to format the disc as UDF and then copy over the data. You can mount a disc image in the Finder (control-click on it and choose Mount It) and it will appear on your desktop as if you had inserted it as a disc. As for verification, it can give you some comfort that there isn't a mismatch between the source file and the disc, but with disc images that is less common.

- Is the video quality different between the two processes?

No. They are identical.

You may have encountered a part of the stack where the discs have a greater error rate. It may be that another part of the spindle will be fine again. Quality control probably isn't that manufacturer's highest priority.

Thanks again, tsantee!

Glad to be of help

Are you using a good quality of media? Does the burned DVD play even though it failed verification?

Something to try is to first Save as Disc Image and then burn the disc image using the Image File setting. Also, try burning at a speed slower than Best. You select the speed after the blank disc is inserted and recognized.
