cornerstone-llc
I look at a lot of peoples posts here trying to get an idea of what type of compuers you all use. For myself I want to use the VHS to DVD software in the best possible manner so Im wondering if anyone has suggestions on hardware. Im thinking of purchasing a system with 2 processors but im not sure the software really takes advantage of that ( yet ? ) . Also where im really stumped is what is the best possible scenario for a DVD drive. What is the fastest one on the market. I suspect the faster the DVD burner the better. WHat about videocard - Im thinking one with 512 meg is good but should I get a better one and lastly Im thinking I should get a raid drive system of some kind - say dual 300 raid drives ? Oh and one more thing - Im leaning towards Windows Vista 32 bit since it seems more compatible with hardware and software than the 64 bit version. Any and all cooments are greatly appreciated. Cornerstone LLC Buy as much as you can afford! I'm partial to Velocity computers. Choose one and configure it to what you want. Start with the Z15 and configure it. You can get a very god machine for around $2100 (remember it may be tax deductible for your business). If you are doing standard definition, probably any gaming computer will work. If you will be doing HD, you (now or in the future), get something faster -- quad core and 2*512 cards? I don't know if you would gain anything with a 1G or 2G card. The fastest burner is probably not the best. If you are going to want to burn a lot of the same videos, get a inexpensive duplicator to keep your computer free. Why Raid? Hold off if you can and get Windows 7 when it comes out (or get a computer where you can upgrade OS inexpensively.

sknis
Wow, that's some massive video card. LOL I'm sure you meant 1GB. Corrected A 1G or 2G card is still "massive". Better have a big power supply!
ggrussell
Yeah, I think the power requirement of the newer video cards is crazy. Definitely not 'green'. LOL

Cornerstone LLC Great questions and a good start. The first thing that really stood out in my mind when reading your post was having "a faster dvd burner the better". This is not the case, if using low quality media burning at a fast rate 12x, 14x, 16x, may cause the image to be distorted, skip or the audio may be off. Purchase a dvd burner with great reviews and great customer support. You won't go wrong this way. I typically never burn faster than 6x, to be on the safe side. Now, a computer while running a program uses almost all of its internals to run the program smoother and effectively. That being said, a video card with 512mb should do, but 1gig will be ready for the long haul and will allow you to use all of Vista 64's gimmicks . 512 cards are slowly fading as Vista becomes more attractive and graphic intensive. A 9500GT should be more than sufficient with your intentions.. Also, the more processors the better....heres why; Single core runs an entire computer, whereas dual core can delegate which controls what. Meaning less payload per processor. Running any program will take advantage of multi-core processors. While one CPU runs the program, the other may be running background programs...etc. AMD Phenom is a great low end triple core processor. Finally, 32 bit or 64 bit? From my personal experience, I have had a lot less .net framework issues with 32 bit and ALL of my programs worked flawlessly. I am on week three using 64 bit and have had a few issues running some older software. I hope this helps, if you have anymore questions about this, feel free to message me. EDIT: Oh, and BTW, a 400watt power supply should do...everyones right about needing a larger power supply. You can't "Go Green" when creating a decent computer. sknis
A 500 watt power supply should be considered the minimum. If you go with a bigger card (or two smaller ones) consider an 850. The price difference isn't that much if you later find out that it is not enough.
