Video Capture

NancyE

Question

I have a Sony camcorder and am utilizing the audio/video connections with the roxio software. When streaming the video from the camcorder to the software everything looks great until I capture. Then the video is okay for 20-30 seconds and then the video becomes choppy, at times speeds up and is choppy, and thus when it does this the audio becomes choppy.

I have looked at the support areas and the group discussions and have attempted to resolve the issue with no luck. I have updated my audio and video card drivers, defragged my system, unistalled and resinstalled the software and have had no luck. Needless to say I have spent hours trying to get this to work.

My system - 3200 amd athlon processor 2ghz, 160g hard drive, 640 ram, dvd+rw and cd rom drives, ati radeon xpress 200 video card, realtek ac97 audio. I updated the audio and video drivers.

On the reinstall of the software, I now have the issue of when I go to capture, the arrow turns, loading pops up, then I receive the message that the Roxio Media Capture has encounted a problem and needs to close.

I am wondering if my system, although it meets the specs for the product, does not have enough get up and go when trying to capture. I can also stream from my camcorder using s-video versus the audio/video cables if that may help.

I don't know how many more hours this may take to get this working or whether it should be returned to the store.

An advice would be appreciated.

Hi nancyE---I have a Sony HandyCam DCR-HC36 and attempted to use it and the Roxio VCRtoDVD program to capture some video. When I tried just hooking up the Roxio capture cables (yellow video, red & white audio) from my sony to the computer and tried to capture, it didn't work (Please note that I can use my program for just about any hardware device and it works. So I don't have any problems)

So what I did next was hook up my Sony Camcorder to an RCA VCR video, and audio "INPUT" ports, using the cable that came with the camera (attached photos). Then from there I had the same cable combination (video, & audio) from the "OUT" ports of the VCR to the "INPUT" (video & audio) ports on my TV. Then from the TV (video & audio) "OUT" ports to the same cable combinations of the Roxio VCRto DVD program cables and into a USB 2.0 "INPUT" port on my computer.

Once I opened up the VCRto DVD program, chose the drive (USB 2861 Device) and click on "Video Capture in the program, I captured all of the video AND audio from my Sony Handycam perfectly. I have no idea why it would not work directly from the camera to the Computer, but if your Sony came with a cable for attaching to a TV, give that a try. My guess is it will work great.

You did not mention the space available on your HD?

Nor did you say if you have gone all the way to burn? Get a disc or 2 of DVD RW for your learning curve.

S-Video produces a slightly better Video quality (it carries NO audio so you still have to hook up the Red & White).

I don't think there is really any problem, just that your PC can't keep up with all of it so the least important part of it, the preview, is left hanging.

I'm not at my home computer to check the HD space available. I will check that when I get back and let you know.

In regards to going all the way to burn, I did go all the way through and then tested the DVD and it had the same effect on the burned DVD as it did when I captured the video. i.e. the video was choppy and sped up.

I was hoping the preview was as you descibed just maybe a case of the PC not being able to keep up, but I think it may be an additional issue. Any suggestions??

Also, any suggestions on the reinstall. An idea why there is a problem when I hit capture at the main screen, I get the arrown, it then appears it is loading, then I receive an error box that Roxio Media Capture has encountered an error and has to close. It closes then I am back at the main screen. If I go to plug and burn I do not have this problem, but I prefer to use the capture feature versus plug and burn. On the first install, i did not have this issue, so I am wondering if something was messed up on the reinstall.

You didn't mention installing the SP2 update for V2D???

Otherwise there is no 'Fix-it' button so you should follow the Clean Install procedures –

Vista

XP

The trick to Clean Install is to print it out so it is by your side and follow it step by step using the More or Less method. (Don't do More than it says and don't do Less!)

I did install the update. I will do the Clean Install and give it a try again.

Thanks

Thanks Frank, I will give this a try this weekend and see if it works for me.
