The Turbo must be connected before launching Toast. There also was an erroneous message in the original version of Toast 10 that the Turbo wasn't connected when it actually was connected and working. Be sure you've updated to Toast 10.0.2.

I do have it plugged in but there is not indication that toast is using it.

I am using the default settings for creating a DVD movie

Okay, it makes sense now. A video DVD requires MPEG 2 encoding whereas the Turbo.264 encodes in MPEG 4 format. So the Turbo.264 is not used by Toast when encoding for video DVD. It is only used when you are in the Convert window and want to export to AppleTV, iPhone and some other devices that play MPEG 4 h.264 video.

Since you are using a G4 Mac I can understand your wanting to speed up the encoding process. Are you trying to make DVDs from AVI files or are you trying to make them from movies you recorded with a DV camcorder or is it something else.

If your source is AVI or DivX files you might just use the DVD-ROM (UDF) format in the Data window and burn what is called a DivX disc. These can be played in DVD players that have DivX play back capability. Most DivX movies are actually encoded to fit CD media for playback in DivX-capable DVD players. If you want to use CD media for those movies then choose the Mac & PC format in the video window. This only applies to videos that already are in DivX format, which is the case for many AVI videos.
