Creating Chapters While Editing

nfaut29

Question

I have used Easy VHS to DVD several times. It is ok from Sony Video Camera. My first problem was: found no way to edit out sections from my tapes while Capturing Video. I was trying to use a pause in the Capture, which is not there. Every time I stop at a spot to forward the Camera tape to another spot, the Computer burns it to the disk and creates another Chapter. Then I have to title it. When the Disk is finalized, ( is gues it is, but don't say it, as it does on my LG DVD recorder) I copy the master on my other Roxio Creator for copies to give away. The videos never play through. They stop at every chapter. Then you have to forward to select the next title you want to see. MY QUESTION IS: Is there no way to have the entire DVD just play through>? Playing DVD after Capture

That start up guide is probably just to show the most basic way of getting video captured & burned from a VHS to a DVD. It may work ok if all one wants to do is a straight transfer from VHS to DVD, but not if you want to do more than that. Once you want to get into more of the editing and creative side of capturing & making DVD's, it's not as "Easy" in the beginning, as video work can be complicated. It becomes easy once you play around with the software and get the hang of using it.

Ok, enough about that ;)

First suggestion I have is to get a re-writable RW DVD disc or two if you don't have any already. That way you can do a few "test runs" to get familiar with and play around with the workflow process.

Second is to do some short captures to play around with as you get comfortable with the process.

The basic process is to

1. Capture your video to a file or files

2. Add the video file(s) to a Videowave project, edit them, enhance them (transitions, effects, etc.) if you want to.

3. Add the Videowave project to a MyDVD project to create the menus, chapters, etc.. & author your disc.

All three can be started from the "VIDEO - MOVIES project category" area you noted.

Capture to a file - under IMPORT it's listed as Capture Video

Videowave to Edit your file(s) - under EDIT ( or EDIT and Transfer) as Edit Video - Advanced

MyDVD to author your discs - under CREATE as Create DVDs - advanced

The best way to learn the editing and authoring parts is to try some things out in small test projects, and to look at some of the pinned tips in the "How to..." areas of the forum for Creator 2009 and Easy Media Creator 10 & 9. Most of the Videowave and MyDVD concepts are the same between them and Easy VHS to DVD. And of course, ask more questions if you need to.

Here is a link to one post that has an excellent "Workflow Strategy" as a guide for Videowave and MyDVD:

First, those aren't chapters, they are titles you are creating on the DVD. The return to menu after a title plays is the default behavior for DVD video discs, even commercially created ones.

It sounds to me like you are using the Plug & Burn option of Easy VHS to DVD. Poor choice unless all you want to do is transfer as much as possible without editing and are willing to put up with occasional failures due to the inherent fragile process of Plug & Burn.

You should cature instead to a video file on your hard drive. Edit that file using Videowave. Add the Videowave project to MyDVD as a single title. Use the edit chapter function to mark the chapter points.

Now you should have a resulting DVD video that will play the whole title and have chapters that you can also go to.

Thank you very much Larry. I believe you are 100% correct. I can't even imagine all the hours I spent making copies of BAD CAPTURES. However, I always follow the instructions before I do things, even thought I don't understand them. This is new to me, except I have copied some things on an LG DVD recorder from the same Digital Sony Camera. I was hoping the roxio Easy VHS to DVD would be a lot easier. It probably would be if they printed an instruction booklet that would explain anything. I followed all the instructions, in the Getting Started Guide exactly, pages 7 to 10. Page 8: It says, Select the VIDEO - MOVIES project category, and click PLUG AND BURN. Page 9 :Set production options, NO MENU ( however, I did not want a DVD without a Menu? # 7 -- Select USB 2861 , # 10 ( STOP THE CAPTURE AT ANY TIME BY CLICKING THE STOP button. etc. Then click Finish etc, and eject your disk. Everything worked fine with every Disc I made. BUT, as I stated, you know what happened. Why do they tell you to use the Poor Choice, as you say ?

I will try to use Video Wave as you said. How do I start using it to capture instead to a video file to the hard Drive? Then to MyDVD ? Then I suppose when edit in Videowave, you can title the Chapters? I did try to copy all my sections in the camera, but then I could not drag them to the Movie maker. Only the first one would move there. Your help is very much appreciated. I will start over and try again. Thank again. Norman
