No audio from movie

todutola@yahoo.co.uk

Question

I used MyDVD LE version 5 which was not perfect but worked but I decided to upgrade and was offered MyDVD8 and I cannot get MyDVD 8 to work.

I tried add new movie and imported from an 8cm DVD recorded using a Sony Camcorder and I get the movie but without no sound, I get sound from the menu but when I select the movie there is no sound I tried capture/import but when I select the disk nothing happens.

I have tried MyDVD Express Add a new movie but it tells me there are no media files and I am unable to change the filter settings as suggested for it to see the .ifo and .vob files. Is there a way to do this.

I also could not open a version 5 project

I’ll appreciate any ideas to resolve this

The miniDVD is finalised and works in PowerDVD, I don't have CinePlayer, the problem is that Media Import is not recognizing the .vob, .ifo in VIDEO_TS. The media formats listed does not include .vob or .ifo,

I know exactly what you are seeing. Below is what will show. If the disc plays fine, then I have not idea why Media Import does not list the movies on it.

As an alternative option, try Walt's suggestion of just copying the VOB to the hard drive and rename the extension to .MPG. That works for some people. The IFO and BUP files are just the menu links/info and contain no video.

I did try copying to hard disk but when i tried to add movie I got icon images of the .ifo/.vob, no movie no sound, the media import still did not recognise the file.

Looking at your media import screen could yours be working because its DVD_VR and mine is DVD Video?

Doesn't matter on my machine. I can import video DVD and DVD VR discs. You don't need to copy the ifo files to the hard drive. Just the VOB. If the VOB file is not copying correctly from Explorer, then I would think there is something wrong with the disc.

Try this:

Insert the miniDVD into your DVD burner or DVD ROM

Let the disc spin up and the drive light go out

Run Media Import

Click on the Video TAB

Does the drive show up in the drop-down list?

If it does NOT show up, then the drive is not recognizing the disc correctly. This is a function of the DRIVE. Not the software.

If the drive does show, select it and tell us what happens.

What I get is 'select a device or source to import from' then I click on the button on the side and then I can see the drive, I select it but it just returns to the 'select a device...' message.

I renamed the copied versions of the .vob to .mpg, I can't use media capture so I used add movie but then I got this message

'One or more of the added files contain AC3 audio, which is not supported in this version of the product. The audio will be replaced by silence. \nPlease see the Home Page for how to upgrade to a version with AC3 audio support.'

Could this be a significant clue and what version would I need to get to use AC3 audio

Forget about opening the MyDVD LE version 5 file. Outside of the name, the two programs have absolutely nothing in common. MyDVD 8 was built around Roxio's DVD Builder, which is a better program, in some respects.

As far as no sound, how do you have your camcorder connected to the comptuer? If it isn't connected via firewire, it probably isn't going to work. You will have to use the software that came with camcorder, if you can't connect via firewire.

Then why was I offered MyDVD8 as an upgrade to MyDVD5 this means I can't work with all my previous material

The dvd movie is retrieved from 8cm disk in my dvd drive not from the camcorder. The format is .ifo and .vob.

Thanks

I don't work for Roxio, so I have no clue why you were offered it as an upgrade. Try capturing directly from that mini DVD using Capture (Media Import).

I tried that but when I highlight video and select the drive, the box reverts back to select a device and the imported window says there are no items to view. It seems it does not recognise the .ifo and .vob files. The only place where it is recognised is add movies in MyDVD but there is no sound. this is really stressing me, I can't even change my display name on this forum as it won't recognise the password I used to log in

Thanks

You have to contact Roxio directly to change your user name. It is a real pain. I don't know why it won't capture from the mini DVD. It should. In version 7.5, when I could not capture from the disc, I would copy everything to the hard drive, and it would capture from the hard drive, just fine.

That is not an option with version 8. It is a huge bug that probably won't be fixed. :)

Make sure the miniDVD is finalized in the camcorder. If the disc will not play using DVD software like CinePlayer, then Media Import will not recognize it either. Media Import will recognize standard DVDs and DVD VR format which most stand alone recorders use. I capture DVDs recorded on my LiteOn DVD recorder with no problems.

'There are no media files in this folder that match the filter settings. To change the filter settings, click the Filter for Media Types button.

Note: There may be other types of files in this folder. Media Manager displays only media files.'

Where it says files of type does not include .vob or .ifo, I think that's a sign that it is not supported, so how come it works with you. Are the DVD's recorded on your Liteon .ifo/vob?

I have nothing to offer here but it seems this is an EMC8 problem in filtering media types. I got the same message as above.

IFO file are not actual video files but "The IFO files includes information such as chapters, subtitle tracks and audio tracks" and cannot be imported or captured.

Here is some general information on the various files ina Video_TS folder on a DVD. You could copy the vob files to your hard drive, rename them to mpg and then try to load them into VideoWave or myDVD.

The DVD-Video and DVD-Audio specifications (see 6.1) define how audio and video data are stored in specialized files. The .IFO files contain menus and other information about the video and audio. The .BUP files are backup copies of the .IFO files. The .VOB files (for DVD-Video) and .AOB files (for DVD-Audio) are MPEG-2 program streams with additional packets containing navigation and search information.

Since a .VOB file is just a specialized MPEG-2 file, most MPEG-2 decoders and software DVD players can play them. You may need to change the extension from .VOB to .MPG. However, any special features such as angles or branching will cause strange effects. The best way to play a .VOB file is to use a DVD player application to play the entire volume (or to open the VIDEO_TS.IFO file), since this will make sure all the DVD-Video features are used properly.

Many DVDs are encrypted, which means the .VOB files won't play when copied to your hard drive.
