Audio/video Capture Using Roxio Usb Device

Larryoke

Question

Hi, I just got the Roxio Creator 2009 product and found out that it does not support my Sony DCR-PC5 camcorder directly using firewire so I wanted to verify if I could use the Roxio USB audio/video capture device to capture all of the information. It seems like it should but being a newbie I wanted to ask. Thanks for your help!

Thanks for your responses. I do have the firewire cable that comes with it and when I connect using it Roxio seems to know there is a Sony DV device there but I cannot see any video or hear any audio on the PC. The ports on the camera do look like the image redwagon supplied. I guess I will go ahead and get the Roxio USB device and give it a try.

Are you sure that a firewire cable came with your video camera? They usually come with a USB cable, and you have to purchase the firewire cable, separately.

Have you set you camcorder to VCR (or eqivalent) or followed the instruction to capture in the mcamera manual?

According to the manual, the Firewire cable (called i.Link by Sony) does not come with the camcorder and has to be purchased separately as Bruce has stated.

Have you tried capturing with Windows Movie Maker?

Yes, I am sure. I am an IT guy so this is not totally unfamiliar to me. The Sony DCR-PC5 actually belongs to my boss and I am trying to set it up for him so he can capture all of his old videos. He must have got the Firewire cable somewhere along the line but it is definitely a Firewire cable. The PC seems to recognize the camera when I plug it in but I get no further. That is why I thought I would just try the straight A/V connection using the Roxio USB capture device.

The camera is set to VCR when attempting the capture. I have not tried Windows Movie maker but I will. Thanks again.

Here is my work flow:

Connect the camcorder via firewire

Turn the camcorder to VCR or playback mode (use AC power - not battery)

WAIT for Windows to recognize the device. You should see a small camcorder Icon in the systray.

Launch Media Import 11

Click the Video Tab and choose Sony DV Device

At this point, you should have a capture preview with 'VCR' type controls under it. These should control the camcorder. Try Play, Fast forward and rewind. If they do not work, there may be an issue with the hardware (firewire port, cable of camcorder).

To make sure it isn't the Roxio software, you should have the same control using Windows Movie Maker. IF WMM works and Roxio doesn't, you can still export the captured video from WMM as DV AVI which works well in Videowave/MyDVD.

How do you know that C2009 does not support your camcorder? Have you tried?

As far as I know the USB capture device only captures from analog devices.

Does your Sony DCR-PC5 camcorder have analog audio (red & White) out ports and also a yellow analog out port ?? If it does then I would guess that it should work. Where "guess" is the operative word here :D Based on a review of your camera, I would say itn ought to work. Assuming your camera looks like this attachment--

As a matter of fact, I have a Sony HandyCam DCR-H36 that has a similar analog audio/video port setup on the camera and am capturing audio and video very nicely. So yours should do the same

There is no reason that I can find that it shouldn't. Your camcorder is miniDV tape with iLink in/output. You will need a firewire cable and firewire port on teh computer.
