Disc Copy ? Single Drive

noodlehead

Question

Mac. OS 10.5. Mac Pro. Toast 8.

I just spent the entire day letting Toast 8 "copy" a DVD that I made from some home video.

I followed the Disc Copy instructions. Except that I do not have multiple drives.

"...If you have multiple optical drives on your computer, you can copy

from one drive to the other. Click the pop-up to choose which drive to

Read From and insert the original disc into that drive. Click the red Record button, choose a recorder from the list, and

configure recording options, such as Number of Copies. Click Record to continue."

There are no alternate instructions if you don't have multiple drives.

I let it run (copy) all day. When it finished I got a message saying the drive was busy. I ejected the original disc. Inserted a new blank disc. Clicked burn and got a message saying there is nothing to burn.

Where is it? Where did the day's worth of copying go?

How do you copy a DVD with one drive?

Anyone, help please.

Thanks.

The most fool-proof way to do it is to choose Disc as the format in the Copy window, insert the source DVD and choose Save as Disc Image from the File menu. When that is finished, eject the source DVD and insert a blank disc. Choose the Image File setting and select the disc image you just created. Burn as many copies as you want.

Thank you, tsantee. I eventually came to that conclusion last night. It was very easy. However, I am still puzzled by the Disc Copy option. Does it only work with multiple burners? If so, it would be helpful if the guide states that. What the guide does say is, "...If you only have one drive on your computer, Toast will copy all the contents of the original to a temporary file on your hard disk and then write it to the blank disc." But Where?? I cannot find this so called temporary file anywhere. I've looked in Converted Items Folder, my Desktop, and performed system wide searches for anything resembling the name of the disc I was copying. Any clues?

As far as getting Toast 10, I can only find a purchase price of $79., no upgrade price. Having done this three times already, I'm not inclined to buy it again. I've never understood Roxio's pricing for Toast. Seems I have to keep buying at full price each time I upgrade.

Thanks again.

It is supposed to work to simply click the burn button rather than first creating a disc image, even with a single drive. But that often doesn't turn out well and I don't know why. I doubt if it is any different with Toast 10. As for the location of the temporary file, it is not written to a location that is visible or can be found. It is indeed temporary.

Roxio isn't offering an upgrade discount for Toast 8 users. You can watch for special sales by signing up for Roxio's emails. Places like Amazon.com and Buy.com have sales at times, too.
