Saved Videos Compat. W/windowsmoviemaker ?

Lowan

Question

Hi all. I just spent a day running afoul of Pinnacle Dazzle DVDRecorder. I'm just trying to get my VHS movies onto my computer (a 64bit Dell) and into Windows Movie Maker for easy editing/playing around with. Can the saved files from Roxio VHS to DVD make clips that can be run thru Windows Movie Maker? Dazzle only produced .vob files that I couldn't convert/alter/re-name into anything that would work for me. If Roxio can do it I'll be returning dazzle to BestBuy and picking up the Roxio instead (my first choice at the store until talked into the dazzle device) Thanks for your help!

I don't mean to hijack this thread but this is exactly my problem. I captured a vhs tape and found it is in mpg format. What is mpg? Is that different than mp2 or 4? Anyway, WMM wont recognize it. I used Windows media encoder to re-encode it to WMV, which WMM accepted but the video was choppy, like it recorded every other frame. ??? So what I'd also like to know is how do I set up V to D to capture in AVI or WMV so I can put it into WMM and work with it? Last week I could'nt even spell vhs to dvd, now I own it. :D Thanks for any help.

The MPG file is an mpeg2 file. The standard for all video DVD discs.

If you want an AVI file, then use the DV option when capturing. That will give you a large uncompressed DV-AVI file.

Question is, why would you want to use WMM if you have the VHS to DVD software that includes Videowave (Advanced - Edit) that has superior editing capabilities, and is designed to work with the files you are capturing.

The key to using any software is to first learn how to use it… Video is not simple so you are not going to get a “simple answer”.

If you use Plug & Burn it won’t stop until it burns a disc. If you use Capture, it will capture the file in DV AVI or mpeg, you choose.

If you have the codecs, WMM will play either one. If not take the file into VideoWave and output it in any format you need.

It would be in the 'Video' group on the left labeled as 'Edit Video - Advanced'

If you can't see the whole window, then either ou have your screen resolution to low ( minimum is 1024 x 768 ) or you have your DPI settings for your display set for something larger than the standard (normal) 96 DPI.

Thanks for the help. I reset the DPI to 96 (it was set to 120) and I get the whole screen. My screen res is at 1024 x 768. I found Videowave and started a project. Your right , I see no need to mess with WMM. This is basically the same thing and I my movies are already in the format needed.

One problem I'm having is that the program runs so slow. When working with pics it seems to be ok but working with (editing) video the program almost makes me think it locked up before I can get it to finish a task. I went and bought another 512 memory stick (1024 total now) but that seemed to do nothing. I believe it may be a registry issue as I have added and removed a few programs lately. System restore wont go back to any restore points either. Anyone have any suggestions as to what might be making Videowave run so slow. I have about 75% free on my hard drive

Define "so slow"?

The speed of VW editing is mainly a fuction of your CPU and your video card. What are your system specs especially vieo card? Also while doing video editing you should not have any other applications running and maybe even disconnect from the internet. The timelength and format of the video you are working on will also slow down the CPU. I find it best to work on short 10-20 minute clips. System restore of course has nothing to do with the program but after adding and removing programs system restore is usually worthless.

Ok, I upgraded my motherboard so I now have an AMD 2300mhz phenom 4 dual core processor, 2 gigs dual channel DDR2 800mhz, NVIDIA GEforce 8200 video, yadayada... 64 bit somthin. I did the clean install per this website (and uninstall first) followed all the instructions. The program loaded rather quickly this time ( about 10 mins ). Restarted comp. Opened program, when I click on edit video the program opens but right away I get "please wait while windows configs DAO"... for cryin out loud! Then I get " DAO- the feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable", which is then covered by another window " error 1706- no valid source could be found for product DAO- the windows installer cannot continue and it offers a source window to browse for a file. I managed to get videowave to open by Xing out and cancelling ( those error windows keeping popping back up- you gotta be quick). While I was in there I brought a couple of pics into a production to try it and it was quick, I can live with it now. So then I get this runtime error program...m files\roxio V to D\video ui11\videowaveii .exe R6025- pure virtual function call. Could'nt X out or exit through file. Is this because my comp guru messed something up while installing and cleaning the new stuff or is it another bad installation? Can you give me a quick fix? This project is for my daughters graduation open house on the 29th, I'm running out of time. Help

If I have the editing feature I can't find it. When I open V to D the screen is way oversized. I have no features along the left side, on the right , half of the support window is missing. I can only see the left half of the support window and I have no way of X'ing out of the program because there are no buttons showing in the upper right corner. Basically, I see just the 6 main feature buttons in the center portion of the screen. Are the edit features along the left side where I can't get to them? How do I fix this screen issue?

Hi, my setup is Windows XP serv pk 3, 112 gig hard drive w/ 62% free, 1 gb ddram and Raydeon 9200 w/128 mb video card. I tried working in VW while unpluged from the net but did'nt make a difference. I looked in task manager and it did'nt show anything else running. I'm no techy , that's about all I know of how to check for other programs running. Right now, I only have about 1 1/2 to 2 minutes of video and pics in the timeline. I removed some unneeded programs last night and defragged, ran virus/spyware program, and cleaned the hard disk. Everything else on my comp seems to work acceptably, although a touch slower than it did 2 weeks ago when I downloaded some programs. Everything I do with VtoD is slow though. From downloading the program from the disk to my computer ( about an hour) to just opening the program and windows within the program. Nothing else ever takes nearly as long to open or use.

The problem is for instance: in VW, in the timeline, if I right click on a pic and choose a task such as cut, the program will go to work but leave about the bottom 3 lines of the task window but close the rest and it takes about 2 minutes ( not exagerrating) and then it will finish. So then I go to another square in the timeline to paste that pic and it takes another 1 1/2 to 2 minutes, and so on with anything I click to change. You can't get much done that way! Do you think my Vid card is'nt up to the task? Or is the processor too slow?

One other question? What is the correct way to move a clip or pic from the viewer screen to one of the timeline squares. I was able to do it once but don't remember what I did. Thanks, Dave

I deleted it (DAO) from add/remove programs and it is working (but slow) , although I have been working with Nero to see if I like that better. I'm going to do a clean install of windows and see how Roxio works after that. Thanks

You didn't list what CPU you have

What do you mean by "dowloading the program fromdisc to computer"? Did you not instal "VHS to DVD" on your computer?

From your post it seems you are combining captured video and photos in your project. Is that correct?

If you are trying to move pictures from one location to another it is much easier to do it in storyline. You simply drag a panel to the location where you want it.

The editing and authoring features of Easy VHS to DVD far exceed what is available in Windows Movie Maker.

To be fair to Pinnacle, I doubt you are using it correctly… VOB is the final output format required to make DVD Movie but that has to be authored to a disc… One does not just slap files on a disc, won’t work!

Install, yes, I had a brain fart and could'nt think of the right term. Yea, a very lengthy install. Yes, I am combining the two. If I left click on the pic or video that is in the preview window nothing happens, it wont let me drag it.

Glad to hear the editing exceeds whats available with Windows movie maker, but that's the main problem I run into. Everything on this new computer (the 64bit Dell) "exceeds" what I was used to doing on my 10yr old previous machine. I don't even want the video on disk, i just want it stored on the computer in a manageable, familiar form. Pinnacle was perfect when I had the analog to digital USB+ tied to Studio 8. plug in the camcorder, plug in the USB+ and videos went straight to Studio 8 If I were running Studio 12 I'm sure the dazzle machine would be doing much the same thing, creating a clip their software can manage. What I'm looking for though, is a converter that can create clips that can be used with windows movie maker. the dazzle machine has no options for format when saving to the hard drive, just where to save the clip. And the format it does this in is .vob. Windows movie maker can't take that. A media converter i have can change it to a certain .avi format, or a mpeg4 but Movie maker doesn't recognize either of those. So I appreciate that Roxio exceeds what I've been doing for the last 10 years, but all i really want it to do is create a clip in a format that can be easily imported into an editing program I am comfortable and familliar with. I don't even do anything with digital pictures anymore because all the photo software available on this new computer "exceeds" the 10yr old arc soft photo editing software I knew how to use. Thanks much for trying to answer, but i suppose buying the easy VHS to DVD and plugging it in is the only way to find out if it can create files compatible with Windows movie maker. And here i thought this would be an easy yes/no sort of answer but unfortunately I find with this new computer there are no yes/no answers.

Haven't seen any posts re DAO for quite some time. You could try the suggestion in this post for it: http://forums.support.roxio.com/index.php?showtopic=2334

What software are you using that captures to "vob"? I would think that every capture software gives the option to capture to avi or mpeg2. What do you mean by "dazzle machine"?

BTW, WMM has no problems using standard DV avi. Perhaps your avi is actuall DivX which WMM may not recognize.
