Need Help Cropping A Video

JuicePod

Question

Hi,

I'm uploading my 8mm tapes to my computer. When I edit them in the advance editing area my 4:3 videos are not filling the whole picture. There is a small chunk of black on the left side of my videos. When I export my videos its still there. When I put them on YouTube its still there. I will put a link below so you can see I mean.

Is there a crop option I'm missing to fix this problem?

Thanks for any advice

Juice

With some older VCRs, you can see shearing at top or bottom (vertical blanking area).

Thanks Gary, I've had a few encounters with the "vertical blanking area" Now I know the correct terminology :D

How are you capturing your video? from analog or digital camcorder? What capture device?

Are you sure you want to crop? You will be losing quite a bit of your video.

Are you selecting the right resolution for the videos? It looks like they are being letterboxed.

Per You Tube

Video

Resolution Recommended: 1280 x 720 (16x9 HD) and 640 x 480 (4:3 SD)

I agree with the "letter boxing" comment.

It appears to me that you are creating a 16:9 project. Hence, when a 4:3 video is added to it it will add the black bars to the right and left to fill the unused space for 16:9.

If your source video is 4:3, then use a project setting of 4:3 and it will fill the whole area.

I am using a Sharp VL-E750U ViewCam (8NTSC) I bought many years ago. It uses 8MM tapes. I think I was taping my old videos in 4:3. How can I found out?

Also I am using the Roxio Video Capture USB that came with 2009 Special Edition.

Thanks

If you just want to get rid of that little line of grayish black on the left side, (I don't know what causes that, one of the boys would though I bet ... it's just hard to notice against the letterboxing I think). Anyway, if it is there when you capture and can't fix it at the source, add a color panel to the Main track and then add your video clip as an overlay. The overlay will be surrounded by a red outline. Use the corner sizing handles on the red outline to stretch the video just enough so that the offending grayish black line is eliminated. If you can't grab the handles, you can click on Settings and adjust size and position from there. You will lose a bit off the top and/or bottom of your clip this way, just play with it so that you keep the important part viewable.

Edit: btw, cute puppies :D

Appears that is part of the horizontal blanking area which is part of the signal. That is outside the TV overscan area and won't be seen on a TV, but is visible when captured to digital.

When capturing to digital, we end up seeing all the flaws of analog recording. LOL With some older VCRs, you can see shearing at top or bottom (vertical blanking area). That is more common than horizontal problems.

You can check your user manual for it to see what info it has. I couldn't find any info doing a quick Google search online btw.

Also, based on the link you posted to the video example, I'd say that at least that tape is 4:3. Try using a small capture and put it into a 4:3 project and see what you get.
