Program Freezes

Ed B

Question

This is the second time I have posted a topic. The first was when I had trouble installing the software and getting a "clean Install", but after receiving several e-mails with suggestions, such as shut down start up files, turn off virus detect and firewall I finally acheived the "clean install". Just thought I'd mention I have never encountered a piece of software that required so much prep in order to install it. Why isn't this info included in the getting started guide? The guide makes it sound so easy and simple. Plug in the capture device and install the software. LOL. Anyway, I got the clean install and tried to capture a video and burn it to disk. It worked perfectly. After that I tried 25 to 30 timed to capture video and when I pressed the 'capture now' the program froze up so bad I had to reboot my computer. I tried one more time and once again it worked perfectly. After the second succesful capture I am back to the program freezing when I press the 'capture now' button.

Simply rebooting the computers does not solve the problem. As I have stated I have rebooted them over and over and they still freeze up. Defrag the drives? Been there done that. All my computers have at least 300 GB of storage space. Also cleaned up registry. This isn't my first time using a computer. I had my own business building custom desktops to order. So I think I know a little about them.

I was just offering suggestions, Ed. The Celerons aren't exactly up-to-date computers, nor is the P4. But, as I said, the software should work with the P4.

Celeron’s don’t get put into high end PCs… Most likely your video cards are either non-existent or low end too. In short there is more to it than just some numbers.

I have it running on a P3 550 with a mere 384Mb of RAM and an add-on USB2 card. Now it drops 1/3 of the frames during capture  but installed and ran first try!

I have it on a DualCore 2.4 Ghz PC with 1 Gb of RAM and both XP and Vista installed. – It runs fine in Vista (DirectX10) but will not run in XP??? No video card and the on board chip is not capable of full DirectX 9 operations!

You have been given many tips by those trying to help you but when asked about your hardware you simply will not answer the questions and become argumentative.

I am sorry but I don’t see how I can be of any more help under those circumstances.

Jim I would be glad to furnish info on my PC. The desktop is the one I most want to use. I have stated what is in it. What additional info do you need. I'll admit I have had it for quite a while. Perhaps it is simply too old and I need to invest in a new machine. Out of time at the moment. Will return later and try to supply as much info as I can.

Great! Sounds like a plan.

Does it work on this PC at all?

Make sure DirectX is the latest/greatest (required to work)

What you got in there for .NET? (3.5 SP1)

Because it is normally very easy… Read Directions – Follow Directions – Click Finish…

I have installed it several times that way but had one install that caused hair loss

In your first post, you claim your PC meets specs but you have yet to list any??? That leaves one area open for question, especially after you said it did works once then fails. And you said nothing about applying SP2 for the software?

A possible, simple solution. Reboot your computer, after each capture.

Actually I have installed V2D on 3 computers. 2 are Compaq Presarios running Win XP Home. They have the 1.46 GHz Celeron Processor. The 3rd is a desktop running Win XP Pro. It has a 2.4 GHz Pentium4 processor. When I say they meet all requirements I meen they have all the latest software updates, More than enough memory and disk space, and yes I downloade SP2. Prior to installing the software I had a printout of the instructions for altering my computer, disabling startup files etc.etc. I followed these instructions to the letter. You failed to mention why all this has to be done with H2D or why this isn't in the documentation that came with the software. I have the same problem with all 3 computers. From the number of problems addressed on the site it seems the problem lies in the software, not in the computers. The fact that I am not the only one whose computer freezes up when doing the 'capture now' proves this. As for rebooting after eack capture? How many programs do you have that you have to reboot your computer every time you use it? That is just crazy. After the first capture I had to reboot after every freeze 25 to 30 time before it worked again. After the 2nd successful capture I have rebooted at least 25 time and as yet not been able to do a 3rd capture. If I seem testy please accept my appology. But with the economy as it is money is hard to come by, and when I go out and lay my dollar down I expect to take home a product that works as promised without loosing hair and sounding like Oscar the Grouch.

The Celeron computers are low end for doing any video work. I am surprised that the software would work at all in those.

The P4 should work, although it will be slow going, and even though you should not have to reboot between captures, as James says, you may just have to do that, anyway.

The good news is, you have had it work, and that is what counts.

One additional thing that may help. Defrag your hard drive, often, when doing video work. It does seem to help.
