Be Careful When You Buy Software By Download

VIKINGMAN

Question

UPDATE!!!

From being upset with Roxio (and Sonic Solutions), I've today recieved e-mails from both Roxio support directly, as well as from Sonic Solutions, that they've extended my download period.

So all in all, they've decided to show perfect consumer-support and service! So now I can just say

Thank you for helping med out!

Besides that, I'll continue to use the Roxio burning software - as I've been doing for the last ten years (started waaaay back when it was called Corel CD-creator 3.0)

For all of you who has mentioned backup. Yes, my fault. I usually back up everthing to my external HDD. This time however, I have build a new PC, and completely forgot that the download-files were place on the desktop...

So once again - thank you for helpind me out!

Regards

Henrik B. Schmidt

If you're considering buying a software-package from Roxio (Sonic Solutions Online Store), be aware and consider this:

When you're buying the software (download), you'll have to pay more than the specified price. Meaning? Well, if you don't buy the additional extended download period (two years), then poor you, if you have a computercrash after a month or more - and you didn't do a backup of your software!

As it is with other software companies where I buy software (downloads), I can always re-download the software form their homepage. This means that I'm actually paying my money, for a "key" to unlock the software, so I can use it. This is NOT so with Roxio. No matter how unfortunate you are, the software is lost and you money are gone, as you'll have to pay for a new download. Or you can do as I do - look elsewhere for your software.

I do think that there should be a solution where you would not have to pay the full price again, but I will refrain from saying what I think about folks who download software and do not make a backup copy of it.

Good practice to observe when buying a software via download:

1) make a backup of the file (as grandpabruce noted in his post above)

2) register the software. Roxio allows you to register the product. That will allow you to retrieve your software key.

3) make a copy of the software key and keep it for safety

Jess, he no doubt received the key, in an e-mail, when he downloaded he software. The key won't do him any good, when he doesn't have a copy of the downloaded software. Not a Roxio problem, but there should be a better solution, for a user mistake, than making them pay full price for the software, again.

I totally agree. :)
