Roxio Photosuite Image Softening Challenge

InfoQuest787

Question

I have just recently loaded Roxio 2009. I often use Roxio PhotoSuite to edit my photos and have used a past version on my old computer that I was really happy with. Now I find that when I load a new photo and the click the Saturation or Exposure option, the image goes soft on the canvas. This is before I have had it do anything. Even when I pick cancel, the image stays soft. I have tested saving the image and then opening the image, the true image has not gone soft. It seems that when the gui comes up, it is having an impact on the display. I am not sure how to correct this problem and with this problem, cannot effectively use this program to edit my photos.

This is on a brand new Dell Inspiron 518 with Core 2 Quad Q9550, 4 GB RAM, AMD Radeon HD3450 256MB PCI-Express x16 RV620, that is running Vista 32.

Also, I have found when using Tint that changing the Tint Color manually slider adjustment does not get reflect in the Tint Balance slider.

Update:

I have been running several test. I found that when you are full screen or zoomed out more, picking Saturation or Exposure will cause the image to go soft. When you are zoomed in, you get the exact opposite. The image will actually become sharper and have more contrast just by opening Saturation or Exposure. This is just by clicking under Fix Your Photos the Saturation or Exposure option and before clicking to have it do anything. Even if you cancel, it will not go back. The other interesting thing is that if you zoom back out to full screen or more, the image will flip to being softer than it really is. So it appears that just opening these options and depending on your zoom, will change the picture on the canvas from what it really is.

In my old Roxio Software, the tint balance bar color would change to match the tint color range you changed the top slider to. It always stays blue and red now. I can live with this one though as I often use the automatic correct to get close. I included it in hopes it might provided a clue why the picture on the canvas changes just opening an edit option. I am afraid if I cannot get this one figured out, I will not be able to use PhotoSuite anymore.

I have tried changing the edit DPI setting, but am still getting the same result. I am running out of ideas, other than to do a complete removal, clean and reinstall. If anyone else has ideas, I will try them right away and post back my results.

I have two screens shots... but am not sure how to post them?

Makes sense about the Tint tool, I only go back to version 9, though, which was also the blue and red indicator as far as I recall.

Maybe someone will come along and know how to fix the softening problem. I tried images from under 200 kb to over 3 mb in size and can't reproduce it.

To post images, you have to upload them to a server and then link to them.

I did further testing last night. What I have found is that Saturation or Exposure are the only two that results in the picture on the canvas being changed before any action are taken. Now for the interesting part, if you go to crop, don't change dimension, click done, the picture will not change when you then go to Saturation or Exposure. I will test further tonight if it will allow you to make changes in these option and cancel them out after doing the crop workaround.

I have also tried to test with different formats and sizes, but get the same result. One thing I always see when I open and edit option is the picture do a quick little flash/movement. I will set my pictures up on a server and provide a link tonight. I will also include pictures how if you are zoomed in, and go to Saturation or Exposure, the picture will have increased contrast.

Update:

Here is the original shot before opening Saturation or Exposure…

Here is a shot when picture was Full Screen on the Canvas and Saturation was opened… notice how the hair on the horse’s mane is soft...

I'm not able to reproduce the softening problem, however, I believe the Tint tool working the way you describe is accurate for that tool. You choose a color with the Tint Color slider and then adjust the amount of that tint color you wish to apply using the Tint Balance slider.
