Compressing Files

Karensha

Question

I am using Roxio Creator 2009 Special Edition. I read in the instruction manual that you could compress larger files so that they fit on a standard 4.7 gb DVD, but I can't find any more information on how to do that.

How do I compress video files that are greater than 4.7 gb in size so that they fit onto a standard 4.7gb DVD?

Thank you.

Too many people worry about file size when duration of the video project is what controls how much you can put on a disc. You can put 1 hour of best quality video on a standard disc; up to two hours at somewhat reduced quality. Almost double that for DL.

When you go to burn the video file in My DVD, select "best quality" (not fit to disc) and then encode (create, burn) to an image file (ISO). when it finishes, copy the ISO file to you disc and it will make it fit.

Video is measure in time not file size.

A 4.7Gb holds 1 hour of video at highest quality. Anymore than that and it gets on the disc by sacrificing quality.

There is no magic compression fairy but some don’t seem to care what they see…

Get some RW media to play with and try it.

1 hour at HQ

2 hours at HQ to ISO then using Video Copy and Covert to burn it to disc (it does the best job of all)

Note: it has to be HQ in the source you can up-render video, it will look like garbage.

The note in the user guide that the OP referred to talks about compressing a DVD source (DVD disc, Disc image file, or DVD-video folder) that is greater than 4.7 gb in size to a standard 4.7 gb DVD-recordable disc, not the size of media files used in creating the DVD.

The footnote, as found on page 157 of the Creator 2009 user guide, is as follows:

Note: If your DVD-Video source files are greater than 4.7 GB in size, the files can be compressed so that the final output can fit onto a standard 4.7 GB DVD-recordable disc. Video Copy & Convert also supports copying without compression for supported DVD Double Layer drives.
