Black Screen In Place Of Images + Errors

Roxio Fan Needs Help

Question

I have burned simple projects with menus just fine.

I am now trying to do a more complex DVD.

I used Video Wave to pull together jpg images (source = Fireworks and various cameras), Video from sony camers, Sound files from various sources.

Next I used MyDVD and linked to all the video wave files with menus.

I can preview the whole 1hour + video just fine. Menus wrk fine, images and vidoes show fine, sound is great.

The problem occures when I try to encode or burn. The problem was first recognized in Creator 9 so I upgraded to 2009 for a clean install and the same problem exists.

I have read many other posts so I have tried burning straight to DVD and I have created a File folder set and then used Video Copy/Create. Same issues.

My wife has recreated the videos several times in Video wave and relinked them thinking thiat might help. No change.

-- IF I get an error free encode and burn - several of the jpg images simply show as a black screen. I can see the reminants of the last image still on screen for example if the image changes from horizontal to vertical or visaversa. OR I can see the last frame of a video if I show an image afterwards.

-- The image that shows black is NOT consistant from burn to burn.

-- Now the longer I play with it the more errors start showing up. Error 8004520c error while encoding movie 1.

-- Runtime errors etc. So we rebuild from scratch.

In the middle of all this I have created two different but smaller MyDVD projects and burned then successfully. NOTE: These small projects do not use jpg images, only video files.

So for a test - I used Video Wave and Saved each seperate movie as a Windows Media File. 4 out of 35 exhibited the problem.

I have checked my Computer against the system requirements and it matches.

I have used various media options but as you can see it is an encodeing issue with jpgs.

It occured in version 9 and 2009.

Do we have to recreate the movies from scratch?

Any other suggestions besides a clean install??

The system requirements as listed by Roxio are a joke and your system should exceed them by quite a bit, especially the video card and free drive space. Perhaps you could list your specs.

A standard 4.7GB DVD will only hold 60 minutes of video, anymore and it will be reduced in quality. Burning straight to DVD is not really recommended especially if your system is close to the requirements. Burning to a Folder set or an iso image file first and then using Video Copy & Convert usually gives better result.

Are you using myDVD or myDVDExpress to do your burn?

Have you cleared out your proxy files folder lately or defragmented your drive?

Another option to try is to set the render mode (under Tools/Options) to software mode if currently set to hardware

How large are the JPG images you are using? That may not be your problem, but it's worth a look.

I recently worked on a problem in MyDVD 9.0.554 [RedBox] where a slideshow always previewed fine, but at encoding time one or more pictures would just show a black screen - seemingly at random.

The photos which never showed a black screen were less than 1 MB in file size, while the ones which misbehaved were around 2 or 2.5 MB. Resizing the file to less than 1 MB stopped them misbehaving. I don't know what the crucial size actually is.

video card is nVidia with 2 MB total and 1.47 MB free

free drive space: over 100 GB

Been Burning to a Folder set using myDVD.

I did read about the proxy files folder so that has been cleared

Defrage my HD between removing Creator 9 and installing Creator 2009.

I will try reseting the render mode (under Tools/Options) to software mode if currently set to hardware.

My system also reported that I should install SP4 today so that has just been completted.

ALL jpg used in this production are larger then 1 MB. The smallest is 1.27 MB and it has had problems.

Have you played the folder set you created on your hard drive using Windows media Player and do you get the problem?

I regularly use photo files near 2MB and have never had a problem.

If you have a look in the output section you'll see what size all your images are reduced to for the burn. There is little point in having your source files larger than that, since they are reduced by the encoder.

The pictures I worked on played up in my machine when they were large, but in Walt's machine he has no problems with 2+ MB files. Perhaps it's worth reducing copies of some of yours to see how it goes in your machine.
